Hello everyone!

I'd like to share an idea for a Nintendo 3DS homebrew project: a Splatoon demake.

I'm not talking about a full port of the original game, as I know that's far beyond what the 3DS can handle. Instead, I was thinking about a version designed specifically for the 3DS, with:

- Simplified graphics
- Smaller maps
- Ink mechanics for movement and turf control
- Adapted weapons and gameplay
- Single-player, with local or online multiplayer if possible

The goal would be to capture the feel of Splatoon while staying within the 3DS's hardware limitations.

I'm not a programmer, but I'd be happy to help by sharing ideas, testing builds, giving feedback, or contributing in any way I can.

Would anyone be interested in working on a project like this? I'd love to hear your thoughts and whether you think it's feasible.

Thanks for reading!

Do you really think you're the first person to conceive of the idea of making a version of a popular game for the 3DS?

It would be an enormous amount of work for a dead console with a limited userbase.

Anyone undertaking such a project would be better off making an open-source clone for another platform.

If Xenoblade Chronicles could run on the 3DS, then I've no doubt that the full Splatoon game could also run. It is a pretty simple game both graphically and mechanically.

It's a nice idea, and I'd say that if/when Splatoon gets a full decomp that it would not be unlikely to be backported to all kinds of platforms including the 3DS, we've already seen Super Mario 64 ported to all sorts of platforms previously thought impossible, and currently we have an early version of Zelda TP on the 3DS.

We've also seen Portal (in some form) on the original DS, for an idea of what you could realistically expect with a "from scratch" recreation. That is to say, not the full game but something that definitely replicates the experience of the original game. Not because the full game couldn't run, but just because of the huge effort it would take to recreate the whole game, it's best to keep the scope small to actually have hope of finishing it.

An organized effort to create this would likely just end up getting shut down by Nintendo unless you make it legally distinct enough that they have nothing to get you on, so you can't really use Splatoon assets or likeness, or exactly copy the mechanics, sadly.
Most fan projects like this are done by a single guy or small group of friends in secret and released before Nintendo has a chance to shut it down. But the cat's already kind of out of the bag when you're trying to organize it in public.

This is far more unrealistic than a Galaxy port. Even if the SC gets leaked or decomp'd there'd have to be so many altercations to get it running natively on 3ds
