I do remember this which yes was a real product and as bad as you'd think.

i had a flavor that they called "Bitter-chocolate" today, just cause i was curious.
it wasnt bitter at all tho, it was super dark and chocolatey and sweet and creamy.
not even a hint of bitterness, im glad i tried it

vanilla is such a delicate, complex flavor.
seemingly simple, but so perfect.

There are two reasons for that. It's not bland but it's ubiquitous, standard, default, so people get used to it. And secondly, manufacturers usually use vanillin instead of actual vanilla beans and pods, and vanillin is just one of the flavor compounds of vanilla, so it's very one note.

Vanilla and rootbeer is a US tradition so a good way to make it less bland if you haven't tried it do it.
