I recently updated my PSP from ARK-4 to ARK-5. The initial upgrade appeared to work normally. ARK-5 booted successfully and the system seemed stable before I attempted any further updates.

After that, I enabled Wi-Fi specifically to test the online update function. I went into the ARK update option and it reported that an update was available. I proceeded with the download and then selected install.

The issue happened during the reboot/install stage. After the PSP rebooted to apply the update, the screen backlight came on, but the display stayed completely black. There was no visible text, no ARK menu, no Sony/PSP splash, and no recovery-style screen. After a short time, the PSP powered itself off and made the typical small speaker “pop” sound that happens when the unit shuts down abruptly.

So the sequence was:
  1. Updated from ARK-4 to ARK-5.
  2. ARK-5 initially worked fine.
  3. Enabled Wi-Fi.
  4. Ran the ARK online updater.
  5. Updater said an update was available.
  6. Download completed and I chose to install.
  7. PSP rebooted for the install.
  8. Backlight came on, but screen stayed black.
  9. PSP shut itself off with the usual speaker pop sound.
This seems similar to other reported ARK-5 migration/update issues where the PSP blacks out or hangs/shuts down after using OTA/update-related functions.

System details:
  • PSP model: [PSP-2000]
  • Official firmware prior: [6.61]
  • Previous CFW: ARK-4
  • New CFW: ARK-5
  • Install type: [ark-4 was full flash]
  • Memory Stick type/size: [MicroSD adapter]
  • Plugins enabled: [no]
  • Overclock settings: [383 XMB and Games]
  • Battery/charger status during update: [charger connected]
I have not yet made any deeper recovery attempts because I wanted to report the exact behavior first. My main question is whether this is a known ARK-5 OTA update issue, a bad flash/config problem, or possibly related to Wi-Fi/Infrastructure update handling.

Any recommended recovery steps would be appreciated. I can also test booting without the Memory Stick, holding R for recovery, holding Start to disable plugins, or rolling back to ARK-4 if that would help narrow it down.

Fix that worked for me:

Holding HOME + R + Power allowed the PSP to boot again. After doing that, the system came back up and was now showing Official Firmware 6.61.

At that point, I treated it like a PSP back on official firmware and reinstalled ARK using the FasterARK method.

For PSP users on Official Firmware:

  1. Make sure the PSP is on official System Software 6.60 or 6.61.
    • 6.60TT and 6.60DT are also supported.
    • Update first if necessary.
  2. Download the preferred variant of FasterARK_psp.zip.
  3. Extract the package onto the Memory Stick.
  4. Run FasterARK and let it complete.
Note - the first time I did this I run CustomIPL and installed it, but then it bricked again and had to start over. The second time. I did not run this and ARK-5 stayed.

After doing this, I was able to get back up and running.

So in my case, the OTA update did not permanently brick the PSP. It appears the update/reboot process dropped me back to official 6.61 or left the install in a bad state, but HOME + R + Power recovered the boot enough to let me reinstall properly.

I’m posting this because if anyone else updates ARK-5 over Wi-Fi and gets the black backlit screen followed by shutdown, try HOME + R + Power before assuming the system is dead. Then check your firmware version. If you are back on official 6.60/6.61, reinstall using the FasterARK instructions.

Obviously, use caution and make sure you are using the correct ARK/FasterARK files for your PSP model and firmware.

Also, the ARK Updater OTA sometimes reverts to a regular system update which is what I think is causing the issue. FYI.
