so I'm on 20.5 but today for the first time in a while I tried to install Tomodachi Life Living the Dream which I loved the demo but my switch is saying that my firmware is too old

is it worth me upgrading? what exactly do I have to do again - I always forget

This game is great but I remember it being a lot of hassle to upgrade the firmware etc

That depends, I don't use pirate software on my modded Switch, so I keep my firmware at 20.2.0 or something like that because newer firmware broke a lot of homebrew stuff. And I only care for homebrew stuff.

Every time I upgrade my EmuNAND to latest firmware, I completely redo my Atmosphere setup, so that there's no leftover from the previous FW. BUt even like this, I usually get more crashes than before. It's a very vanilla setup, no sysmodules. I have the feeling that newer firmwares are just less stable with Atmosphere. Wouldn't upgrade if you don't have a compelling reason to.

alrite so i was thinking along these lines too - I see a lotta threads of problems with homebrew on the newer firmware

so is it a fair statement to say there has been a lot of issues post 20.5?

Updating isn't that hard, just update your hekate+atmosphere while you download the firmware package + extract to SD + install with daybreak. As long as you have sys-patch then you should not need to worry about sigpatches.
As a rule I just check which firmware is required by the games/updates/DLC I'm trying to play (with NX Game Info or similar) and only update to that exact firmware, since the latest is usually not the best.

If it doesn't boot after updating, delete your sd:\atmosphere\contents. This is the only part that can be a little annoying, because some of these files come with homebrew which needs them to work, but the files aren't labeled in any way. So you have to go through and update all your homebrew, tesla overlays, sysmodules etc. to ensure everything works after deleting the folder. Possibly some of them are not compatible with that firmware, or you have to look for workarounds/forks to get them working again. It can be a good rule of thumb to always delete this folder when updating but personally I only bother if there are crashes.

In addition to all of that, you should of course keep your homebrew up to date with hb-appstore to ensure proper functionality, especially when updating firmware or Atmosphere. This is a quick and painless process though.

In particular I believe EdiZon and many overclocking tools are incompatible with newer firmwares, but there are alternatives if you use those.

I tend to avoid installing sysmodules as much as possible, because they tend to break with updates, if there's anything you aren't actively using then you may as well remove it.

so if I did upgrade, I would upgrade hekate first, followed by atmosphere and then perform the firmware upgrade?

I will take a think - the game I mentioned is actually really good but its a PITA doing these upgrades
something is bound to break or not work or be imcomaptible enough to make me lose sleep :(

If you're still worried about issues, make an emuNAND backup first. Specifically of the SYS partition and boot0/boot1 (only those are tied to firmware version). Then, you can easily roll back your firmware if there are any issues that can't be easily fixed.

I just deal with issues as they appear, the most important thing is that the console boots and the games work, everything else I can deal with later.

I have the latest and almost everything works including tinfoil. I’m saying almost because I’m not sure what doesn’t work. Of course it took several tries and different work arounds. Guess it comes down to if you’re lazy or not.
