Megaman X has just received it's first ever fully playable native PC port through static recompilation.

This was made possible through an actively in development tool known as snesrecomp, which allows for static recompilation of SNES games. Currently, the ecosystem is still early, with Megaman X being the second fully playable title to date.

Megaman X is playable end to end. Players may experience minor visual issues at select points in the game as of the v1.0.0 release, but it should not impact gameplay.

Most notably, slowdown in areas with lots of enemies or with certain abilities such as Storm Tornado are no longer causing slowdown.

I had to look it up because I could have sworn there was a PC port back in the 90's. I think I played a demo of it, in fact. Plus, there was the Mega Man X Legacy Collection on Steam.

Even though Mega Man X is widely available, I think this is great news. I like that SNESRecomp is going for full library support.

I'm not really knowledgeable about this stuff, but would the games that have slowdown run better through SNESRecomp? I'm thinking about games that work better with FASTROM hacks or Star Fox running at a solid 60fps.

Got that mentioned elsewhere! Personally, I was totally unaware.

It's my understanding that one has some differences to it (I think I read someone saying it didn't have ride armor, perhaps?).

Being pedantic, the title is still right in it being the first SNES port to PC, since I'll assume Capcom went from source on that one.

But either way, yes! Definitely a good milestone for snesrecomp. Definitely trying to broaden the ecosystem to make future titles more approachable.

Forgot to respond to this, but yes. One major benefit is lack of slowdown here. When I was playtesting, I was able to get through all of the typically heavy areas, like the Armored Armadillo minecart, the fish in Launch Octopus's stage, and pretty well anywhere with using Storm Tornado without chugging.

the legacy collection is emulated and reportedly has considerable input lag, though it's super super easy to dump the roms from it and use them in your emulator of choice (or to use in this recomp, if you re-patch it to the original ROM with an xDelta patch)

Seems to me the best way to play MMX these days would be to emulate Maverick Hunter X for the PSP. There's another game Capcom ought to re-release some day.

Oddly enough, it was by Stephen Rozner, responsible for the earlier Mega Man DOS games - but obviously this one turned out substantially better.

In theory, the dumped ROMs could be gotten to work. Most of the glue is there. There'd be some rediscovery on offsets and perhaps some functions that aren't discovered by the heuristic finder, but it's not unreasonable to think it could be done.

Yess, I keep forgetting that Armored Armadillo's stage had noticeable slowdown on hardware! If I remember correctly, it's mostly in the last stretch.

I played through the game so many times as a kid (I did the Hadouken unlock process multiple times), and yet, I keep forgetting.

I looked up some footage of that version, and it does have the Rozner Labs logo on it. Maybe I misremembered and I never played this version. I can tell looking at the footage that it looks the part, but it doesn't behave the same. (How the hornet enemies spawn in, how the enemies in vehicles respond to X standing on them, etc.) It's fascinating. It's definitely not a straight port of the SNES game.

That's a shame. I was thrilled that Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 had Mega Man 9 without input lag. It seems like they did a better job with the mainline series. The X series seems to be filled with random development oddities. It can never seem to catch a break.
