Steam Deck gets a major price bump, more than 40% increase for US buyers

With very little in the way of announcement, Valve has today increased the price of the Steam Deck but some fairly considerable margins. Both of the available models, the 512GB and 1TB OLED systems, have seen an increase. You can find an overview of these changes below:
  • 512GB OLED
    • UK: £479 ➜ £649 (35% Increase)
    • EU: €569 ➜ €779 (36% Increase)
    • US: $549 ➜ $789 (43% Increase)
  • 1TB OLED
    • UK: £569 ➜ £779 (36% Increase)
    • EU: €679 ➜ €919 (35% Increase)
    • US: $649 ➜ $949 (46% Increase)
Unlike the recently announced changes to the cost of the Switch 2, these prices have already come into effect, delivering a serious blow to the value the Steam Deck previously offered. With the Steam Machine still on the docket for this year, it remains to be seen just how expensive it will end up being.

Honestly, this is just going to help Nintendo that much more. As all these portable systems are getting priced out of the market, Nintendo is holding fast with theirs. Is Switch 2 getting a price increase? Yes, but it isn't this steep, and most regions are delayed in that change. Heck, Steam Deck is just the system. Switch 2 is technically a more capable system with a dock and detachable controllers, and is now that much cheaper by that comparison.

I don't even want to think what the rumored PS6 Portable will cost now.....

This makes the Xbox ROG Ally X look like a steal.
Don't worry, their price will go up in a week too lol. Nothing is safe.

Doesn't look good for the Steam Machine or the Steam Frame. Still planning on getting a Frame when it comes out if I can.
The Frame they specifically said they want to make cheaper than the Index. But.... we will see how that goes.

Indeed. While both ASUS and MS haven't pushed/announced anything (yet), local markets are already doing their own thing.

I think they said that 6 months ago. There is no guarantee they are sticking to that. As it is, the Index has been discontinued, and even their store is showing multiple SKUs out of stock. Had they continued making it, I'd imagine they would have increased its price, thereby, they could still have Frame less than Index, but be more than people were expecting.

Almost none of our current representatives will even admit we're in a recession to begin with, so it's not going to get better any time soon. It's not just gaming either, they're making all forms of entertainment more expensive before they slopify them.
Is it just me or is it weird how before, games were developed cheap & efficiently for older systems. But now games cost more time & money to make from bigger studios. Yet smaller ones can still produce a game that don't cost a lot to make, & don't ask for much money, yet are just as fun as the ones asking more from consumers? It's very strange. I don't know how game development works, but I think they should have figured out how to reduce cost of production a long time ago with the technological advancements.

Different demands from different groups of gamers. Personally I think PS4-era graphics were as good as they need to be, and the focus from there on out should've been performance/optimization instead. Unfortunately the people who want total photo-realism are still very vocal, and console makers still feel the need to cater heavily to them.

Do steam decks still sell well? I would have thought sales would have slowed to a crawl after this long on the market, and so many other devices doing the same thing. The extra price hike would kill off any potential sales.

RIP, the Steam Deck at least had the proposition of being a better bang for your buck when the Switch 2 launched. Now the Switch 2 is more powerful and way cheaper (granted you'll have to pay a bit more for switch games compared to PC)

Almost 800 bucks is a genuinely bad deal for the hardware you're getting, the og Steam deck at 400 was a steal. like at least bundle portal or something

I cannot fathom how smooth-brained their operations are, raising prices without upgrading anything about it. They can sit on store shelves now until the prices come back down to normal. So sick of this corporate GREED, just because they are too stubborn to cut into their profit margins.

Please understand. Gabe Newells $100,000,000 yachts are very expensive to run.

Honestly, when the steam deck first released at $399, the profit margins were probably next to nothing. But for a sudden $200 increase, that seems far beyond what the extra costs for the hardware could be.

Although the Switch 2 doesn't come with a library backlog of hundreds of previously purchased games.

Gaming is circling back into luxury territory. The worst part is that it’s very unlikely we’ll see pre-AI prices, even if the hypothetical bubble bursts.
First time I saw the increases start happening, I was reminded of this comic page from one issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly. Funny how an economic inflation that's affecting the gaming industry (among other things) reminded me of a comic I read during my high school years referring to a very similar scenario.

(...God, I'm old...)

Everyone's increasing so they thought why not, too.

This isn't going to make people buy it, though.
Funny enough, it's already showing as sold out in the U.S., so either people are indeed buying it, or it's the typical scalpers trying to turn a profit.
