Sony announces PlayStation Plus price increase for new customers starting May 20

Earlier this year, Sony announced major price increases for the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal. Now the company is raising prices again, this time for PlayStation Plus.

Sony says that starting May 20, 2026, PlayStation Plus prices for new customers in select regions will increase due to “ongoing market conditions.” According to the official announcement, prices will now start at $10.99 / €9.99 / £7.99 for a 1-month subscription and $27.99 / €27.99 / £21.99 for a 3-month subscription.

In the United States, that means the current PlayStation Plus Essential pricing of $9.99 for 1 month and $24.99 for 3 months is set to increase to $10.99 and $27.99 respectively.

It also appears for now that 12-month memberships are not being affected by this particular increase. And current subscribers will be able to keep their current pricing unless they let their subscription lapse or change tiers (except in Turkey and India).

It depends on the games, some games actually have a stronger online presence on Nintendo, Megaman Battle Network and Monster Hunter Rise come to mind for example, same happens with GTA Online which has way more players on consoles than PC.

I personally did stop subbing to Plus since mine expired and monthly subs were already expensive. I'll probably sub again when they make another decent sale on Plus prices.
I used to play Mario Kart 8 online for free before it became a paid service, but afterwards did I start paying for it? No, I just quit playing it online.

That was pretty much the only Nintendo game I enjoyed playing online and in a way they took it away from me by greediness, though can you blame them? I mean yes you can, but M$/$ony were doing it for years now.

It's just business and people are clearly happy to pay for it now.

I pay for Nintendo because it's like... 24€ a year or so, last time I bought it was 2 years ago, where I got another free year for subbing, so yeah. It's negligible compared to like 150€ for Sony without discounts.

Ooorrr… you could buy a pc
Which has also gone up in price multiple times before Switch 2/NSO prices have even gone up once. And with no cheaper options, since Valve doesn't make Steam Decks anymore. And with PC being stuck with Sony's live service games going forward, the Concord Tax screws them over, too.

Points for trying to sound smart with your deflection attempt, though.

Honestly after looking up the so-called price hike, it increased $1 to $5 depending on the category or version.
Honestly it looks like they are trying to just get everyone to get the Premium Version, because it holds the best value, so they are increasing the other too.

And lately they have given out an amazing library, the 1 year premium will be good for those that don't purchase a lot of games per year.

I'm not much of a gamer these days and have no subscriptions to anything besides YouTube Premium but hell, even YT Premium keeps going up and I'm thinking about getting rid of it. I feel bad for gamers with all these price hikes as of late, it's almost as if companies don't want customers anymore. Greed is at an all time high.

You sub it to get ad free? I just use Brave, ReVanced, and adblockers.

Initially yes, but I've had it since 2019 when it was only $8 a month but now have a lot of videos downloaded/saved and mainly use it on mobile. That's how they lock you in I guess, my wife also uses the YouTube Music part of it so it would suck to get rid of now even though I really want to, so I feel for gamers who have so much invested into their subscriptions while prices keep getting jacked up.

The videos downloaded through the YT app have DRM so it's not that great, but you're paying for more than one person to use those services which isn't too bad.

Check out the Grayjay app you might be interested.
