World's first Wii U Gamepad to PC dongle called Chocolate announced, initial wave of pre-orders sold out immediately

A developer named Famidawg has produced the first working dongle that connects the Wii U Gamepad to PC. Called Chocolate, the dongle promises to allow full use of the Gamepad's features, (including the touchscreen, accelerometer, gyroscope, camera, microphone, NFC reader, and IR blaster) on PCs using a new open-source SDK. This dongle will work on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and connect to the gamepad using a companion app.

The dongle will allow the gamepad to run in any app compatible with the Chocolate SDK, as well as a desktop mirroring/virtual display feature and for use in PC games. The brightness settings, rumble toggle, and power-saving modes will also be available right on the gamepad.

The first wave of 30 units sold out extremely quickly. It was priced at $59, with a Fall 2026 delivery target. Only US shipping was offered, however, in their Discord server, Famidawg stated that they were open to international shipping for future waves if they're satisfied the service will be up to their standards. Also, when this first wave ships, the app, SDK, and their sources will be offered on their website.

It would be nice if we could connect to this dongle on the Wii U as well, since the Gamepad can sometimes have a shitty connection with the console as well.

But, but...

Why not displaying all the features on a real Wii U Gamepad?

I mean, if you want to showcase your device, show it live, and not on a "presentation" without the real product.

If this is real, it's awesome, but smells fishy to say the least. I really hope I'm wrong.

One more thing, US shipping only, sucks.

I awaited so long for this. The Wii U gamepad can be quite useful, it was just stuck on the Wii U.

I can't afford one now though, so I'll have to stick with less practical solutions if I want to do something similar.

Maybe keeping my Wii U was the play after all. Problem is, I need a battery that won't die on me in a nanosecond.
I got a big one on aliexpress, shipping times are ass for li-ion batteries though.

Edit: Oh yeah, news seems good, I know someone was working on this stuff, I don't know if iut's the same person, but it sounds neat

Beat me to it. I was working on this writeup last night before I got busy.

Anyway, this is such a cool product and I can't wait to get my hands on one. I tried to place an order right away, but it wouldn't take my payment so that's too bad. I'll probably have to try my hand at building one when the open source files and BOM are released.

Also, for an opposite but equally cool project, check out MattKC's Vanilla project. It lets you pair your phone or PC as a gamepad to a real Wii U console.

Sounds excellent with a lot of fun uses if it can get enough support.

USB A is a retro choice ngl.
I don't mind USB A for dongles and adapters. Most motherboards still have way more USB A than USB C

The creator has the prototype from three months ago on their channel. They have also said a demonstration is coming soon.

want
Wish it was open source
It is, but the guy is only open sourcing it until AFTER he makes all his money. Lmao.

Featured on front page, nice!

At the same time, I expected it could work without the adaptor if making a working setup out of readily available software and hardware... I hope that's still the case (edit: on Linux, no hardware is necessary at the cost of a bit of complexity), because $60 with shipping out of US is an absolute no-go, as much as I'd like to support the creator.

i don't think this is the reason
they're open sourcing everything, (not just the sdk) when the orders ship
technically the fastest way to get one of these is to build it yourself when the orders ship and you'll have it before anyone gets a 'real' one in the mail
also, genuinely, if their whole idea is to not release the source until they've made their money, they're thinking awfully small
30 orders is a chunk of change but is seemingly drastically below the demand

I am 100% sure that AI is helping the development in every single instance hehe, nice one, great idea. Simplistic clean video presentation, lets hope it gets real. Will get one, but we need to see real world footage before. Always wanted to use it on the PC. Imagine already being able to connect the dongle to an android phone via adapter and have the phone as the main computer behind the device while on the go..
