2026 seems to be the start of the new N64 golden age!

So far we have...

- The Analogue 3D (modern N64 clone console based on FPGA tech out now)

- The ModRetro M64 (another modern N64, the competition for Analogue, coming soon)

- Junk Runner 64 (an open world N64 game like BOTW or Skyrim. If you can see it, you can go to it)

- ECW Born to be Wired (the AKI style game ECW never got back in the day)

- WWF Backlash (a proper sequel to No Mercy being developed)

- a new N64 video player released a few days ago

- "new" N64 games soon to be published by ModRetro

- Mario 64: Return to Yoshi's Island almost complete by Kaze

- Another RPG project on the way by James Lambert

- A new N64 development engine similar to Unity released earlier this year (Pyrite 64)

-Work is being done to get Sharkwire Online active again

- Smash Remix

I'm sure I haven't covered everything but I'm VERY excited! It's nice to see old hardware make a return! Anyone else keeping tabs on the N64 scene?!

If I understand correctly these upcoming N64 games are so advanced the FPGA clones can't run them. They only run on original hardware. The games utilise a 9th bit in the RAM which every official release ignored to save time on R&D.

Took me a while but here is JunkRunner 64 running on the Analogue 3D

I think that the recent advent of much cheaper MiSTer FPGA boards/systems is much more notable than Analogue 3D and M64 combined. With the exception of cartridge SNAC (being able to use original cartridges), it's all there*, and allegedly the open source N64 core is more accurate than Analogue's own. And of course, it does so much more than just N64 emulation.

Thanks Taki!

* I don't know if it's an isolated issue, but the N64 turbo core was always giving me graphical issues. Might just be me (edit: turbo core N64_80MHz_20251119 broke VI, so either source N64_80MHz_20250811 or use Clean HDMI video mode).

you know, the source compilation ports can be a lot of fun. Thanks for bringing this stuff up!

Don't be quick to dismiss the MiSTer FPGA too, it runs N64 nearly flawlessly, despite taking shortcuts here and there. It also uses original controllers, Bluetooth, or USB with 1000Hz polling.

Yep, I brought it up too a few replies back :p

With a free SNAC port, it's also possible to connect a SNAC N64 controller adaptor, which is pretty much just like connecting controllers on the aforementioned N64 clones. No added latency from the OS processing USB either!

I'd love to play overclocked n64 on a CRT this way. It would be (almost) like having a real n64 that can runs certain games without framerate drops.

played some ecw born to be wired and man its a blast. I'm going to have to do a 2 player co op tag team with a friend of mine for my youtube channel.
I'm making a "Special Edition" version by adding all the full length wrestler themes and some ECW documentaries that can all be played from the N64.

Sounds great! I personally cannot wait to try it out. You know what would be cool? Adding glass panes or glass light tubes into the mix thats what gcw aka game changer wrestling has.

check out that level of ultra violence.

The M64 is also using a fork of the MiSTer 's N64 core and getting most of the improvements back ported to the MiSTer core. Robert is a god amongst men, truly.

expect this one to be DMCA'd
It can't be, he's using completely new assets he and his artists have made.
