Earlier today Sony announced new price increases for the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player, with the updated recommended retail prices set to take effect on April 2, 2026. In its announcement, Sony said the decision was made because of “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”

The updated recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. are as follows:
  • PS5 – $649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99
  • PS5 Pro – $899.99
  • PlayStation Portal – $249.99
Sony also listed updated prices for the U.K., Europe, and Japan, while noting that other territories should check with local retailers or direct.playstation.com where available.

This isn't the first time that Sony has increased the price of the PS5 since launch, nor is it the second time. GBAtemp has reported on Sony's previous price increase from April, 2025 as well as the price increase from August, 2025.

As a reminder, the PS5 originally launched in November 2020 at a recommended U.S. retail price of $499.99 for the disc version and $399.99 for the digital version.

I can agree on cutting the high paid actors and licensed music to try keeping game costs down. As sick as I am of open worlds, I don't see that making any difference. High detail graphics are kinda mandatory to keep. No one wants all new AAA games to look like PlayStation 1/2/3 games. I think the majority want graphical advancements with each gen (except DLSS 5, lol).
agreed ! All I want in a game is it to not stop tho. Like the Final Fantasy series. Even after all the main missions the quests will keep me alive and happy. Even Skyrim type but 100% on Graphic Enhancement. The TVs are 8K why not games . Keep up with the new stop worrying about open world online games. Example. GTA6 love gta but not that much.

Only 8K? It's 2026 so where's the 16K UHD TVs!!

Pretty much this, and it's a practice that was performed by Western and Western-leaning AAAs long before Nintendo even considered having any DLC at all. There was a time when Western AAAs were still USD $60 at release...because Western publishers started testing how far they could get away with cutting away pieces of the game to sell as DLC through "Deluxe Editions" or Season Passes. Started with cosmetics, then slowly moved on to core aspects of the game and/or its overarching story. (The latter to the point that for some games, DLC is required to understand what the hell is going on, instead of things being explained - even if not fully should future non-cut story be in the planning stages - at some point in the base game. Looking at you, SquareEnix - you chopped FFXV into pieces, left most of the explanations in the DLC, and then never finished the story in a satisfying way.)

And for the most part, Western and Western-leaning AAAs (like Sony) still stick to this formula in many cases, even at times in the indie realm, to the extent where it feels like only a select few publishers use DLC almost purely to expand an already-solid base game.

Dude.. Even before DLCs.. Expansion packs.

My point exactly we’re advancing in quality every where else but consoles. Who cares about playing with a 1,000,000 person server or online gameplay. I like online don’t get me wrong. But why we inviting more people when it’s toxic as is lol stay with the 20-50 max update servers quit cramming more people (to just hack it eventually anyway) to make it unfair for others . I have my moments but graphical lives matter too. What happened to the gameplay of Easter eggs and the best graphics ever. Idk I don’t get it but it’s not my decision. Not like I play every single day 🤣

But then the issue is if the price keeps going up, then people will eventually stop buying. I know the PS5 sells (or at least sold) well. But raising prices on consumers multiple times wont always work.
It's also getting kind of old. It's like the Nicolas Cage of gaming systems...

Increase in physical prices, you mean. Yoshi was only listed as $60 until they announced there would be a difference between digital and physical prices going forward.
No, decreased. I mean, unless you are trying to suggest Nintendo wasn't greedy with the US market before but now they are, which kind of goes against all the hate they got prior to this and making everyone look rather entitled.

Probably more likely than not that they'll do a price increase too, but I do think Nintendo is a better position with more wiggle room to deal with it. Their financials are very good, like having practically no debt (or at least compared to other game companies). Heck, they are soon to drop the price of digital for the US to match the difference it has been against physical in other regions. They could have done nothing to keep taking a few more bucks, but didn't.
It's much lower spec stuff than what Sony have.

PS4 and Xbox One didn't use cutting edge tech.

If anything Sony and Microsoft went too far imo and too much focus on ray tracing which in and of itself hasn't achieved much so far.

In hindsight sticking with sata SSD and expandable USB 3.0 / 3.1 SSD would have been better. The PCIE 4.0 DirectStorage stuff ultimately became a white elephant.

A die shrink at this point would also be welcome given how big these consoles are.

It works until it doesn't. It's always a balance. If at some point they see it sells less AND they have an incentive to sell more, then they will drop prices.

Not a lot of people were able to get one in my country at release. I posted on a gaming forum and I got an offer from a guy who wanted to come pick it up for what is 2600 usd currency. I accepted but eventually backed out. I was 100% into creating in Dreams on ps4 and I was desperate to ditch that noisy beast and to play with backwards compatibility.

I thought about picking up a PS5 Pro just before the price rise but chose not to because realistically I won't have time to play the handful of PS5 exclusives I'm interested in.
