Earlier today Sony announced new price increases for the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player, with the updated recommended retail prices set to take effect on April 2, 2026. In its announcement, Sony said the decision was made because of “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”

The updated recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. are as follows:
  • PS5 – $649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99
  • PS5 Pro – $899.99
  • PlayStation Portal – $249.99
Sony also listed updated prices for the U.K., Europe, and Japan, while noting that other territories should check with local retailers or direct.playstation.com where available.

This isn't the first time that Sony has increased the price of the PS5 since launch, nor is it the second time. GBAtemp has reported on Sony's previous price increase from April, 2025 as well as the price increase from August, 2025.

As a reminder, the PS5 originally launched in November 2020 at a recommended U.S. retail price of $499.99 for the disc version and $399.99 for the digital version.

Another hard pill to swallow is how few people here are capable of adjusting prices for inflation. As pointed out by others, that $899 is LOWER, not higher than the $699 of late 2006. I feel embarrassed for the Gamerboy Community™ every time I see a statement like this. I'll make this as simple as I possibly can: A dollar in the past was worth more than a dollar today. $699 of today's dollars are worth nearly one thousand 2005 dollars.

The only thing worse are the people who think it is just a greed move on the part of Sony, as if the price of the 2TB SSDs and GDDR6 haven't at least doubled since October.

The problem is 2tb nvme new is about 300 dollars. Used to be like 200

This is what you guys get for not buying Concord! You gotta pay that "Concord tax" to play on Playstation!
Their concord games are big failure and now they need charge more money to close the big hole sink in sony headquarters.Add to the whole ia enchilada hardware worldwide issue, sony health its not looking good🤣.

2TB expansion only cost $119 on sale a few years ago, PS5 Pro with disc drive was a tad over $800 after tax. For less than $950 I was able to get a 4TB Pro with disc drive. To think if it dies Sony offers 0 repair options but to replace. And it will cost me almost the same price for just the console. I now have a family with necessities I need, almost $1,000 for an aging console won’t make the cut. Not because I can’t afford it but because their right to repair or even options for repair are not acceptable.

Most expensive console ever and the first time they won’t offer any options for repair out of warranty.

Nope.

I've read some people blame this on Trump's Tariff Tax. I guess anything bad that happens in their life is due to the orange man... lol

I'm tired of seeing current gen consoles getting more expensive than cheaper and games are also getting more expensive, sigh. PS6 will probably be like 1500.

Nope, I'm not buying another console with such a heavy price tag. My PS4s all have SSDs (inc my PS5), and my Switch 2 has a 256GB Express SD and that Express SD also went up.

Gaming's just got way too expensive of a hobby for anyone joining now.

Orange man is responsible for a lot of things I mean look at the oil crisis in the middle east which largely ripples across south Asian countries that relies heavily on middle eastern fossil fuels.

Yeah tariffs are just one small aspect of global politics driving these prices up. Oil goes up, so does the price of shipping everything. And obviously it really doesn't help that AI companies are left entirely unregulated and permitted to buy up component stock several years in advance.

I remember when consoles dropped in price as they got older, not go up.

But we all know the price hike is over gteedy business men charging more for it, because of AI.

But then again i remember when games were physical and idiots didnt favor digital.

Notice how two issues here are related to the newer generations....

Theyll be the ones to kill off console gaming.

That's the point. It's one part of it all.

People at this point will end up just playing older consoles because the current and next gen are becoming way too expensive.

There's a valid reason why the prices increased this time. And it starts with the letter I.

Iran war Trump started? Reportedly, this increasing the cost significantly on a number of goods due to shipping issues resulting from this new conflict. Wouldn't be surprised if this was the final push for Sony. In addition to Trump tariffs, and the unregulated AI boom (which the current administration is also doing nothing about)
