You probably think the "open border" thing is true, too, don't you? The US has never had open borders, though (well, especially not in our lifetimes anyway).
I personally like the idea of free travel and open borders, lmao, but it's not something US democrats do. Democrats are pretty conservative on border policies, and US democrats are even broadly conservative or at best centrist on A LOT of social and fiscal issues, despite what the republicans may claim.
Where the parties generally differ is on pathways to citizenship, which conservative republicans seem to hate because they don't want people to come here at all (for some reason), while dems often do like programs allowing for citizenship to be achieved by "illegal" immigrants.
