As much as I love Okami I find Japanese mythology settings in games to be stale. It's just been done too many times now. Same goes for Scandinavian mythology. It's easy to understand why these settings are so common. Japanese developers are more familiar with their own country's indigenous religion. We have more surviving information on Scandinavian mythology because not long after people stopped practising Germanic paganism Snorri Sturluson preserved it as best he could in the Prose Edda. Personally I'd like to see other cultures get more love. Guacamelee! while not my favourite game interested me because of its Mexican folklore inspirations. The Zelda series is loosely based on Celtic mythology. I'd like to see more games set in Celtic mythology and a more orthodox setting. Same goes for the traditional belief systems in other regions like the Indian subcontinent, Thailand, Indonesia, Slavic regions and so on.

I still like them, but I agree they’re a bit overused at this point. I’d love to see more games draw from less explored mythologies, especially when developers do proper research instead of just using surface-level aesthetics.
