Still working on a proper thread title, but for now, please continue reading...

Hello everyone, today I decided to delve into the current state of physical releases for the Nintendo Switch 2. Initially when the Nintendo Switch 2 came out, I already wasn't convinced or pleased with the funky nature of things like Game Key Cards and such. I already had opinions over the matter then, and I still hold true to those opinions today, if not more so now more than ever. For the record moving forward, I don't personally own a Nintendo Switch 2, and I don't have plans to ever own a Nintendo Switch 2 for quite a few different reasons. My primary concern in this thread has to do with the current state of physical releases for the platform, because as it stands, it's actually kind of scary with what I have encountered so far with some of the games currently available. I created an image library of the packaging art of many physical releases, of course this list isn't complete for many reasons, but it does give a general idea of what I am trying to show and why I have concerns. I broke this list down into five categories, this will change as time goes on when I add more the list, not to mention potential further optimizations. Unfortunately this won't be organized very well for the time being, sorry for that.

The categories are as follows:
- Physical Releases
- Physical Releases (Partial)
- Physical Releases (Digital Download Codes)
- Physical Releases (Game Key Cards)
- Physical Releases (Nintendo Switch Software + Upgrade Pack Releases)

Lengthy category names, but I will delve into what they mean below.

NOTE:
I'm not going to sit and claim to be an expert, and I may get some things wrong. Considering the work in progress nature of the list already, mistakes are going to be made. If there is an error, let me know and I can make corrections. I'm working based on the information presented to me, and my personal understanding of this matter. I anticipate and am open to changes in this logic. Also, the primary reason why I chose to use postimages.org for the images, instead of Imgur, is because Imgur made too many changes to the organization of how images are handled. I don't even know where the category options are anymore, unless they removed them. I suggest using an ad-blocker when viewing the images. I tried to post the links to lead directly to the images to bypass the ads, but platforms do platform things. Sorry guys and gals, I tried.

Physical Releases
Total Entries: 23

This category consists of your standard issue physical releases. The software in this category are not only native Nintendo Switch 2 hardware capable, but are also fully stored on the game cartridge, meaning the user can run the software offline.

Physical Releases (Partial)
Total Entries: 1

This category consists of partial physical releases. The software in this category usually have missing content within the confines of the physical cartridge. Results may vary on severity of the situation, ranging from the inability to obtain 100% progress completion, to literal chunks of missing data, rendering the software completely unusable by itself. These releases require that you download the rest of the missing content through a software update, usually day one updates. The software in this category is native to the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware like the genuine physical releases. Offline play is still possible, however your experience may be compromised if you lack all of the necessary data to make the software complete.

Physical Releases (Game Key Cards)
Total Entries: 59

This category is very similar to download code physical releases, with the difference being that the physical cartridge(s) themselves act as the key to access and download titles from the Nintendo eShop. The software in this category is native to the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware like the genuine physical releases. Game data is not stored on the cartridges however, which means these cartridges are effectively useless in an offline state, if you haven't downloaded the game prior to going offline.

Physical Releases (Digital Download Codes)
Total Entries: 5

This category is very similar to game key card physical releases, with the difference being that there is no physical cartridge inside the software packaging, instead there is a slip with a download code, intended to be used in order to download the software from the Nintendo eShop. The software in this category is native to the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware like the genuine physical releases. Offline play is still possible, but only if you have downloaded the game from the Nintendo eShop with an active internet connection.

Physical Releases (Nintendo Switch Software + Upgrade Pack Releases)
Total Entries: 17

This category consists of Nintendo Switch software releases with an additional upgrade pack to take advantage of the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. Essentially, think of this category as Nintendo DS games with Nintendo DSi enhanced features, or Nintendo 3DS games with New Nintendo 3DS enhanced features. However, unlike the systems prior to the Nintendo Switch, this software has a price of $10 extra for what's essentially Nintendo Switch 2 enhancements. This isn't to say that this is purely the case for every Nintendo Switch 2 Edition release, but for most releases, this is generally the case. To clarify, Nintendo Switch 2 Editions are NOT equivalent to native Nintendo Switch 2 software, as these releases explicity state the use of original Nintendo Switch software with upgrade packs right on the front of the packaging. Essentially forming Nintendo Switch games with Nintendo Switch 2 enhanced features. This is the primary reason I have split these releases away from the genuine physical releases, because they technically aren't full fledged Nintendo Switch 2 software builds. These releases are backwards compatible with the Nintendo Switch, meaning if you want to future proof for if an when you get a Nintendo Switch 2, you'll get the best of both worlds, if you pay a little extra ($10 more) for these versions.

The more I think about it the more likely it is I never own a Switch 2, and I never thought that would happen with a Nintendo console or handheld but here we are. Maybe if it gets piratable I might buy one and just pirate games I don't care either way Nintendo will get $0 off me software wise.

They would have to blow me away with games and I don't think just a new Zelda and new Mario is going to cut it. Donkey Kong Bananza I want to play that but not enough to buy a Switch 2.

It's definitely great as a Switch Pro of sorts (except the screen is still inferior to Switch OLED), but there's just no way of defending key cards. It's effectively killing Switch 2's genuine physical releases.

Nintendo is clearly embracing the digital format and this is how they're handling it.

What kills me is Nintendo had the audacity to be the first to release an $80 game in the U.S. that was not a special edition (Mario Kart World) They've gotten too arrogant they didn't need to do that their games never have realistic graphics they aren't spending the money say Sony is on something like The Last of Us. They're always behind on technology yet now they're ahead on price that doesn't work for me. During the Xbox 360/PS3/Wii era the Wii was the weakest console but it was also by far the cheapest, that makes sense. What they're doing now makes no sense and $450 for a hybrid is too much. They are just flat out price gauging something I never thought I would see Nintendo do.

And I haven't even followed closely I don't even know but are key cards $80? Surely not, but either way it's flat out ridiculous.

What makes this even worse, some of the games listed, actually have physical releases for the Nintendo Switch. So they basically screwed you over with some of the Nintendo Switch 2 versions of the games, by not giving a physical release, like they offered for the Nintendo Switch.

They just assume people don't care but that's just not true. I don't think these people that actually work for these companies think like we do they just think we want to play the games and it doesn't matter if it's digital or physical or whatever and they can just charge us the same. Since digital games have been on consoles they've charged the same as physical despite cutting out the middle man of a retail store cutting out having to make a case and cover and disc. They think it just doesn't matter to us and for a certain percentage of gamers that might be true to me it's very important. This is the way I look at it if I can't have a physical copy not a key card but an actual disc or cartridge and I can choose between buying a digital copy and pirating I would choose pirating why wouldn't I it's the exact same thing. Of course with Switch 2 you can't pirate their games but it matters to me I prefer if I'm going to buy a game I want an actual physical copy of that game over digital or some ridiculous download.

Pokemon Pokopia has a pre order price of $70 on GameStop and that's a key card (while published by Nintendo).

Only 10GBs and it's still gonna be a key card.

I've just gotten to where I don't care I encourage everyone to pirate games as much as possible. If we all pirated these companies would have no choice what so ever but to drop their prices. But if we keep giving them record breaking profits their greedy asses will just want more profits and raise the prices. EA year after year makes record breaking profits, billions and billions, yet lays off their employees. Fuck these companies.

And I know we're talking about Switch 2 you can't pirate a Switch 2 or play any emulator so just don't buy one if you haven't already. Or if you must wait a little longer to buy a game when it's cheaper, anything not to make these companies feel justified raising the prices because then they'll just do it again.

Following the news about the increased prices of RAM and NVME storage. Seeing some articles about manufactures like DELL and Apple already make price increases on hardware because of these...

I am wondering if Nintendo will increase key cards and digital only titles because of increased material cost for physical carts given news about this subject.

Meanwhile the rest of humanity has just made the Switch 2 the fastest selling game machine in the history of the universe. Gee, I guess whining and boycotting is doing a great job of forcing the hands of the companies who lay off employees that they don't need while still putting out great games that people actually buy. But to "switch" around what you said: "If we (game publishers and Nintendo) keep making games that are impossible to pirate because the S2 is unhackable, the thieves will have no choice but to buy them in spite of spending the past 50 years using the excuse that "industry greed" was why they stole games from us every chance they had." You realize the point of capitalism is to make money, right? Call it greed, comrade. But it is that "greedy" system that has produced all the great stuff around you. Have you not learned the lessons of the Cold War still???

And it is so unfortunate that I have to practically make this my mantra, but you clowns need to learn economics before talking nonsense: Adjusted for inflation, the $60 price of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in 2017 is EXACTLY THE SAME (!!!) as the 2025 $80 price of Mario Kart World. They are literally the same price; Nintendo did NOT raise the price one bit. That's why you 1 percenters who whine, threaten boycotts, and pirate whenever possible are ignored by the 99% of people who get it and just go out an make the S2 the winner of this generation just like the S1 was for the last generation, only now they'll sell a helluva lot more copies of the software, digitally or otherwise.

And if any of you actually still believe the Switch 2 itself is overpriced, I've adjusted for inflation for you:

Switch 2 shipped in June at $449
Switch $299 in 3/2017 = $395 in today's money
Wii U $349 in 11/2012 = $488 in today's money
Wii $249 in 11/2006 = $400 in today's money
Gamecube $199 in 11/2001 = $361 in today's money
N64 $199 in 9/1996 = $406 in today's money
SNES $199 in 8/1991 = $470 in today's money
NES $179 in 10/1985 = $531 in today's money

Switch 2 is a bargain, which is why it is the fastest selling gaming machine of all-time. Just wait till you see the prices of the PS6, new Xbox and Steam Machine.

Guys, this thread isn't here for piracy advocacy, anti-piracy, whether or not artificial intelligence with computer hardware is somehow bleeding into the console space, the video game pricing changes, etc.. This thread is about the concerns for physical media releases of the software for the Nintendo Switch 2 (while being an indirect library or "guide" on what to avoid if you don't like game key cards and such). Talking about this is cool and all, as is feeling however you feel, but don't jeopardize the thread and force a moderator(s) to lock the thread.

As hard as it is to accept for us who grew up inserting a cartridge or disk into a system and playing, physical releases are dying. Nintendo succeeded in making physical releases prohibitively expensive or technically unfeasible for certain games, effectively forcing developers to Game Key Card or digital only releases. I hope Nintendo does continue to release their own full games on physical cartridges because in my opinion you buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo exclusives and a PC or Steam Deck for everything else and physical media for PC games is already long gone without any intervention from Nintendo.

Concern being that a strained supply on DRAM and NAND with the AI chip demand could make for higher price points for physical releases. Making Nintendo reconcile with publishers using key-card and digital only formats for releases.

I think it would be worrisome if physical releases became a 'premium' purchase. I imagine Nintendo will weigh on which release format reaps the most profit (key card, digital, physical). Time will tell.

I think this is good to catalog releases for the system helpful to follow any trends that arise😎

There not dying
they are pretty much dead at this point,

Xbox is bowing out the traditional console market in favor of hybrid PC/Cosnole setup, I doubt they will ship that with a disk drive that will read xbox discs. The series x might be the last Microsoft machine capable of reading Xbox discs.

PS6 looks to be making the disc drive an optional purchase, Knowing sony the disc drive will be always out of stock like it is for the ps5 pro and slim. They might not even publish physical ps6 games and just keep the drive for backwards compat only,

Steam machines are entering the market and well Physical PC releases died the moment steam became popular in 2004.

The switch 2 is heavily favoring digital releases, A lot of devs can't justify the economic costs of printing full on switch 2 carts or have a technical reason,
Game well under 64gb? Why pay for the expensive 64gb cart.
Game over 64gb? Won't fit on the cart anyway,
Not sure if you'll recoup the costs of the cart? The key card is the safer bet.
Cart too slow for complicated asset streaming setups? Digital only,

Switch 2 is a bargain
For the moment I'd mostly agree. Its price is about to go up early next year though (Nintendo's stock dip is a dead giveaway), and there's no defending this key card nonsense regardless.

Just wait till you see the prices of the PS6, new Xbox and Steam Machine.
Switch 2 OLED will likely be priced on par with these, no consumer electronics can escape the AI effect now that there are only two RAM manufacturers.

IMHO mods should sticky this thread, very informative.
