"Zelda's Adventure" homebrew demake for the Game Boy gets a brand new DX update with colour support

Back in April of 2023, a Game Boy homebrew developer by the name of John Lay managed to make an entire recreation of one of the most infamous Zelda titles, Zelda's Adventure, originally released for the Philips CD-i, into a full and complete demake for the original monochrome Game Boy.

The Zelda's Adventure demake was made in its entirety with GB Studio, aiming for a style and gameplay similar to that of Link's Awakening, also released for the Game Boy, with John Lay recreating the layouts, structure, maps and story from the infamous Zelda's Adventure, and instead making it into an 8-bit adventure.

As of a few days ago, and after more than 2 years since the original Zelda's Adventure Demake release back in 2023, John Lay dropped a brand new update to his homebrew project, featuring not only a slew of bugfixes and new features and enhancements, but also adding full colour support to the project, giving it a proper DX treatment, similar to what Link's Awakening saw back in the day with the release of the Game Boy Color.

Here's the full list of changes compared to the original release of Zelda's Adventure GB:

Release 2.0.0

Features / Enhancements:

  • Port to GB Studio 4.1.0
  • Add colour
  • Add sound FXs
  • New music
  • Improved combat (enemy/player flash and death animation)
  • New enemy animations (flying enemies cast a shadow)

Bug Fixes:

  • Fix kernel panic bugs. Previous project used too many local variables exceeding the global limit
  • Allow rupee, hearts and items to be collected by touching/walking over
  • Player restarts in the correct location after game over in Shrine
  • Remove dependency on custom version of GB Studio to draw HUD and use native plugin system to swap spell sprites

Those interested in trying out Zelda's Adventure DX can do so by visiting John Lay's Itch.io website, and while at it, those interested in supporting the project can do so by dropping a small donation for his work on this lovely homebrew project.

Nice! Good thing to see it wasn't abandoned. Also his other project was interesting, but the restoration project is even more interesting
This. I recall playing an early version, and I wanted to wait for it to be completed. Then, I promptly forgot about it. Now, it seems like it was completed and DX'd.

I have to remember to add this to my playlist.

it's very interesting that someone would go through all this effort to remake a zelda cd-i game
Never underestimate a fan community. After all, Sonic fans took the time to recompile Sonic Unleashed for the PC.

what's up with the gender swap? why is zelda suddenly a girl now etc i thought woke is dead?
jokes aside, it doesn't look bad from the footage shared above. tho why did they put a cursor in the pause menu to switch weapons etc instead of just simple button presses like in LttP? it looks hella slow and sluggish imo

Did you ever screw around with gb studio?

That's the default menu option screen

The project is limited by being created using that tool

That's interesting. The original CD-i version is said to be about 5-8 hours, and the longest Youtube playthrough I found for the demake was about 4 hours. So, it's not a long time to work with a quirk like that.

I remember trying to play this but it kept crashing and I couldn't get very far because of that...
