'Hoy everyone! I'm finally able to start working on something that I've wanted to do since I was 10: translating OoT into Dutch!
Screenshot 2025-11-09 121458.png

I'm using Skawo's Zelda 64 Text Editor for this, which supports way more revisions of the game than I remember it doing at first (Master Quest debug ROM only??).
As someone who speaks Dutch as their native language and would constantly be faced with the fallback English localization as a kid, I've always wondered why they never really bothered. At least, until the Wii U released. Now that I'm in the role of localizing this game, I kind of feel like it isn't that much of a 'hassle' and actually find myself to enjoy it! Only hurdles I've encountered so far are certain text box limitations + item names without a clear name.

I mainly base myself off of the English and Japanese text, but for certain things I also use French and German. I'll periodically post my progress here as I get more lines done, and at some point I'll also work on the UI elements, though that's what I'll do after text. Also, I am from Belgium, so some words I use might not exactly be 'Algemeen Nederlands/General Dutch', though I do try my best to use words that are used in both Belgium and the Netherlands! Personally, I don't speak any dialect within Flemish, so any words from those I won't use.

How far are you going to translate everything, because I'm thinking about some weird names right now.
"Binnen in de Deku Boom", "In Heer Jabu jabu's buik". etc.

It can be hilarious.

To put it shortly: everything. (that I can do, at least)

For things like location/item names, I try my best to find an official translation; e.g. “Temple of Time” = “Tempel des Tijds”, but with areas unique to this game, I need to do them myself. Luckily, this isn’t too hard for me, so for example, I’d translate “Inside The Deku Tree” as “In de Deku-boom”, “Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly” as “In Jabu-Jabu’s buik” etc.

How far along are you? This translation would be a great way for my girlfriend's little sister to get into zelda.

Hey, thx for your interest! As far as translated text goes, I’d say that about 30% has been completed. Cannot say much abt the textures, though a very kind volunteer is helping me with the rendering process, so I’d have to ask them.
