Hey everyone, I’ve been trying to set up tiramisu on a used Wii U I bought for a few days now following the hacks guide exactly, and I keep getting the error “FSO open failed. file missing vol/external101/wiiu/payload.elf” every time. Here’s what I tried so far:

1. I made sure payload file was there
2. I tried another sd card, both I tried were Sandisk, one was 170mb/s 64gb and one was a different sandisk 140mb/s 128gb, both were formatted to fat32 with 32k clusters with guiformat, both reformatted repeatedly
3. Tried blowing the slot with an air compressor, then reseating the sd card I’ve done it like 20 times at this point, gently ofc
4. I went and download the payload.elf file separately, deleted it in the tiramisu package and placed that separately downloaded payload.elf file.
5. It’s a used Wii U looks kinda old, so I was scared the sd card was busted but nope, I went to MiiMaker and saved a picture of my Mii onto the sd card, I checked on my pc the the picture was there just fine.

At this point I’m pretty stumped, and bummed since the only reason I bought it instead of a switch was to hack it for fun and it was cheaper, but not that much cheaper. My only other idea was I heard that the Wii U gamepad having a bad signal could cause it, and I have noticed the signal is a little shotty at times but overall it works fine. I bought the mica2 chip but that won’t come for a week or two.

Any other things I can try?? Thank you

What location did you actually put the payload.elf file in? Cuz from the limited information it sounds like to me you may have it in the wrong location. Either that or your folders are named incorrectly.

Btw this may seem like a dumb question, but what did you label / name your SD Card? Because naming the actual card wiiu can cause problems with the process.

Copying from the wiiu.hacks.guide website shows you the general SD layout you should have.

Your card could also just not be playing nice with the console even after formatting. It's happened to me before even with name brands.

Yup, that's the site I've been using and I've been checking the layout nonstop to make sure I got it right lol. The only difference is in the wii u folder of the sd card payload.elf is before payload.rpx in the order of files, so like this:

wiiu
--apps
--environments
--payloads
--payload.elf
--payload.rpx

I don't know why mine is ordered different. I can't attach a screenshot because I'm new, but the files are there it's just the order the files are in. I had it named "NINDISK" because I had read about not naming it Wii U, but then on the latest reformat I just left the name blank to try that.

So with SD cards not playing nice with the console, I just have to keep trying different cards? Is there a specific type that people have been using that works better, like "Sandisk Ultra Plus" for example?

Oh no......oh no......damn man I have to be the biggest overthinker on the planet. I did ALLLLL this research, and then you really made me look at the sd card layout because I tried everything else and.......I moved the whole tiramisu package from downloads to the card, including the random "environmentloader-c451287"etc. I just erased the sd card and moved the wiiu folder from that and placed it in the sd card and it worked perfectly smh. Sorry for my extremely dumb moment, hopefully this thread helps anyone else that made this amd dumb mistake. Thanks for making me take that tenth final look lol

Order doesn't matter as long as the actual location is correct- since it just uses the path(s) of the files. Also any name works as long as it isn't wiiu because then it'll think the root of the SD Card is the wiiu folder. Anything else works.

Not sure if any brand specifically works better. In my case I think my cards were just on the verge of death since I've had all mine for like 6+ years. Just don't buy a random crappy off-brand card and you should be good.

No worries. I've seen people make the same types of mistakes, lmao. I also made them when I was new to stuff like this, so catching it on your own is a good first step. :)

Glad your issues are resolved.
