I mean in game size (MB). For example, FF3 is 128MB; Is that the biggest game available? And what are the chances Nintendo goes over 512MB for a game? Will that happen?

Sorry if I ask a bit many questions in my first post, just a bit worried because I just ordered a 512MB DS-X

Thanks a lot!

edit; Also, why the heck does it say 16GB when it's only 512?

I don't think so. Largest TO DATE is 128 MB (megabytes!), and maybe they'll go for 256. Now for 512, I think it's quite unlikely.

About the DS-X, I don't know about you, but I have one and it's not that great. Sure, it plays practically all games, but if you don't mind waiting 3 months for an update, be my guest. I claim the R4 to be much better. Though you have made your choice and it WILL satisfy your gaming needs, homebrew or ROM, guaranteed. Just not as well as the R4 (more updates, etc.).

16Gb (gigaBITS, not BYTES!) is 2GB (gigaBYTES!).

4Gb (gigabits) is 512 MB.

LOL!!! You just bought a what?! lol wrong move my brotha. 16Gbit is 2gbytes, MIRITE? I think you mean 4Gbit...
And I think they just try to make the space sound larger

Why would you buy a DS-X have you not been looking on the forums? See this is what happens when there is no review updates, noobs like him buy something crappy now because it had good markings several months ago.

You shoulda got a R4+1gb+3in1 = win.
DS-X 512mb = teh fail (now at least)

Try to cancel your order!

well actually nintendo was already talking about increasing their game catridges so more textures and better quality graphics can be used. i read somewhere that they might be thinking about games nearly 1gb. i think i read it on ign.com, i don't remember. if it does, that sucks 'cause i only have 1gb...lol..

Now, don't insult him/her, but you should have read reviews before buying, that I must agree.

But, as I said, the DS-X is not that great, but it plays games fine (DO NOT complain about Zelda, there IS a fix for that. APPLY IT if you want to play it so badly, which I did).

Hey, thanks for the answers. My friend has this DS-X and I think it's just awesome. I have read lots of reviews etc, and in Norway, my only option was the DS-X without importing. So I'm completely aware of what I'm doing
smile.gif
Yeah ghettobob; I meant 4Gb (512MB).

brutalboy: Are you playing Zelda on DS-X, and can confirm that it's working 100%?

Again, thanks!

OBJECTION That's a lie.. the highest possible a DS cartridge can fit IS 512MB, It will NEVER happen, unless they make new cartridges, THAT THE DS CAN READ. So yeah, that's a no no.

I just started play Phoenix Wright, so I find that extremely funny! 'Objection, thats a lie" man...I laughed at this for a good 5 minutes.

Source?

Anyway, that may be the most data the DS can address at one time, but there are ways around that. Systems have been getting around their cartridge memory limits for nearly 30 years now.

I don't have a source, I remember reading somewhere. I'll google around and see if I can find it. Well I don't have a source but now I remember. Somewhere here in GBATemp people were talking about DS-Xs 512MB a ram and how many games can actually fit, I don't remember who exactly but somebody on the thread said that the largest game a DS cartridge can fit is of 512MB of ram, and said it's probably why the DS-X, with the smallest size is exactly 512MB.

Yes, loathsome, I am playing Zelda on DS-X, and it's working 100% after doing this:

1. Load the JPN ROM with DSlazy, and press "unpack" on DS lazy. // Here the JPN ROM is either 0864 - SimCity or 1103 - Hoshigami.
2. Copy the "arm7.bin" file and paste it i.e. on desktop.
3. Now load the protected (not working) ROM with DSlazy and unpack (same as in Step 1) // Here the protected ROM is either 1158 - Zelda JPN, 1159 - SimCity EUR, 1170 - SimCity USA or 1181 - Hoshigami USA.
4. Copy the "arm7.bin" you got at Step 1 and paste it into the folder where the unpacked protected ROM is, overwritting the "arm7.bin" there.
5. Now click "REPACK" on DSLAZY. // It is assumed you didn't close DSlazy after unpacking the protected ROM (Step 3)
6 it will prompt you to rename it. // A .NDS file named as you choose will be generated. This is the unprotected ROM.
7. then put the unprotected ROM on your card and try to play normally.

And it works!

Right now, the biggest game cart is 128 megs. (REDS, Jet Impulse, Hotel Dusk, EBA, for example) ASH is supposed to be the first game to use a 256 meg cart. 256 may be the largest we'll see for the next year or two. The majority of games don't use larger than 64 megs.

I don't know what the largest they could possibly make would be. Nintendo always did say that if a game required more space, they could make a larger cart, but I never heard a theoretical max.

Realistically, there is no maximum.

Lets say the DS can address a maximum of 256MB on a cart (This is not a fact, I'm just using it as an example). If that were the case, you could design a 4GB cart with some bank switching circuitry that had the memory devided up into sixteen 256MB banks. You could only access one bank at a time, but you could switch banks quickly and easily, giving access to the full 4GB.

Ever since the beginning of console gaming, companies have been getting around the built in limitations of video game systems. If Nintendo finds themselves with a good reason, they will get around the current space limitation.

Sorry to say this, but this method was already found and documented by yours truley a week:
http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=541...73&#entry697573

And re-explained by CougRAWR (who went into a step-by-step tutorial, thanks!) here:
http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=54524&hl=

This method was found working for the games listed above.

You should learn to give credit to whoever came up with the method...

I already used this for sim city a couple days ago. Had a few bugs but nothing serious or anything that'd bother ya.

Anyways, not only has this method been known for a good bit already, but there's even a little package out there that'll do this all automatically for you via a batch file at http://m3.omgrofl.com/ by GBAtemp member Bad_Ad84. This was probably posted here before (how else would I know about this page?) but let's go again for good measure. It's the one labeled "Arm7 save data fix". Just toss the Sim City (J) rom in the Donor folder and whatever rom you want to recieve the old arm7.bin in the patient folder and it'll sort the rest out for ya.
