PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility could be returning to the PlayStation 3 , according to what appears to be an internal document accidentally leaked by Sega of America, one that hints at downloadable previous gen games available on a case-by-case basis.
That document, uncovered by French gaming web site Objectif-Sega , notes that "SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN," which may indicate a strategy similar to the one Sony has taken with original PlayStation games, released as "PSone Classics." The document appears to be a list of notes from a meeting between Sega of America and Robert Dyer, senior vice president of publisher relations for Sony Computer Entertainment America, dated from early August.

The notes mention two titles, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and an unspecified Sonic the Hedgehog game--there are seven Sonic-starring games for the PS2--as examples of candidates for release.

If the document is legitimate and the notes are accurate, the plan to offer downloadable PlayStation 2 games makes a good deal of sense. Sony just recently announced the God of War collection, which bundles the first two games in the series on a Blu-ray disc for the PS3, with a handful of enhancements. The ability to offer individual games certainly makes a greater deal of business sense, considering the PlayStation 2's 1800 game strong library would offer ample opportunity for profit on digital downloads.

The same document also mentions what appears to be downloadable Dreamcast titles for the PlayStation Network . Those titles don't appear to be exclusive to the PlayStation 3, however, as the rumored meeting notes read "If we provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they're interested in having exclusively."

We've attempted to verify the validity of the document and are seeking comment with Sega of America and Sony Computer Entertainment, but did not hear back before publishing. And, for the record, the above image is merely a Kotaku-created mock up.

Also, the folks at Objectif-Sega appear to have retracted their story at the request of Sega France. For me at least, the document in question appears to still be live at Sega's press FTP.

Front Mission 4 and 5 on the PSN would be the best news ever as well as Gundam Side Story 0079 from the Dreamcast era. Now if Sony can get some Saturn games then I can get the Blue Destiny trilogy. Full of old school win

Also rumors of an import store section that range from $9.99-$39.99. I have three game that must be added: Mobile Suit Gundam 00: Gundam Meisters, Battle Assault 3 with Gundam SEED, and Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny: Rengou vs. Z.A.F.T. II. That's all I ask for Sony....

I doubt that will happen and the selection wouldn't be as good, if you want Japanese PSN games sign up for a Japanese PSN account, there are tutorials on how you can do it on Youtube if you aren't fluent in Japanese and all three games most likely would be there.

Make sure you buy a Japanese PSN card off of Ebay or Play Asia.

I don't need a Japanese PSN account since I don't have a need for it. Hardly ever use my PSP now and I don't have a PS3. But if this import section rumor is true, I'm not hesitating to go buy a PS3 to play some PS2 imports I never got a chance to play.

You know I'm talking about PS2 games right?

This seems like an incentive for me to increase my PS3 hard drive space. What's the max amount of space you can have on a hard drive in the PS3?

I got all the games I want on the Dreamcast plus Sega usually butcher games when porting them. The reason why their PS2 Saturn/Arcade ports never got released outside of Japan.

the dreamcast was easily used to play backups to so $20 for a used dreamcast vs $300+ for a psp plust the cost of downloading them from psn(if you don't own a ps3) to get them and play em.
i rather see some sequels to some of there forgotten franchises like shenmue than some ports.

You can put any sata harddrive in a ps3 by opening up the lid and replacing the drive.

I see you're a Gundam fan. Going to get GvGN+ for PSP? I just hope it works on 5.50GEN-B

definitely looks odd as they are different u know... they said ps2 on the psn but i feel it will be too much of a rush to do so at the moment as the ps2 games and console still sells (maybe ps1 and older ps2 titles)

This would increase sales since you have more people who can buy PS2 games and if there are PS2 games at the PSN store then there will be a software update with BC for the 40, 120, and the new 250 gb PS3 coming up.

i hear Xbox Live was selling Xbox Classics at the Marketplace so why not sony
EDIT:dont know why 2 posts came up

I hope they port SA + SA2, those were the only good 3D sonic games, and they took up a lot of my time in the gamecube days.
