So I'll be getting a Switch in about 2 weeks.
It's already jailbroken tho. It's an OG 2017 model.

I'd like to start over from the beginning, so I get everything just the way I want.

How do I go about this?

Congratulations!

Thank you for the replies.

I'd like to remove the jailbreak and get a clean slate, so to speak. Is this possible?

I'll be getting a SanDisk pro 512Gb or a Samsung ultra 512Gb.

Was planning on a 1Tb grad, but those are to expensive.

There are a few unbranded 1Tb cards that cost about 70$ on Amazon but most likely they're no good.

If you reboot it and don't inject a payload, it should be like normal. All of the atmosphere stuff is on the sd card, but won't be accessed. For clean slate, wipe the sd and start over with the guide. I recommend doing so anyways, because it's fun and easy.

Also, do yourself a favor and get a good RCM jig if you don't have one yet.

Great!

I always prefer to do these things myself. It's an opportunity to learn as well as satisfying.

It does include an RCM loader, so I should be good to go.

Today is the day my Switch arrives.
The guy selling it confirmed it is banned (doesn't matter to me).
However he told me that it only boots to black screen if a payload isn't pushed. It is a sysnand installation.

Is it possible to make it stock (without a backup) and make an Emunand installation?

if it wont boot ofw at all, then it might have a bricked sysnand and only running off emunand now. but little information as of now. see if seller has a nand back up.

once you get it, inject hekate, make sure autorcm is off, shutdown and try to reboot ofw, if it works, great can start from scratch. if black screen as he says. then jig + inject hekate to get back to cfw.

Yes but it's kind of pointless on your end.

The only reason to use emunand is if you want a clean setup that can go online or you use multiple SD cards like me. Since it's banned, you're better off just doing all the hacking/bad stuff on the normal nand (still keep a backup of the nand though just in case an update/game kills the nand).

It is a sysnand install, no Emunand.
He doesn't have a backup as he bought it jailbroken himself.
I'll have more info when it arrives.

My goal is to start over from scratch, so I'll have a setup that's 100% known to me. I figure this will require me to remove everything from the sysnand (if possible without a backup) and go through the hacking process.

I mean what you would end up doing is:

1. Go to the switch format it
2. Backup old CFW files
3. Download latest CFW files
4. Perform nand backup
5. Update to latest firmware using updater while in CFW

Thanks, that gives me an idea of what I'm in for.
Got a bit worried when he I was told that it only boots using the RCM loader.

Hypothetically speaking tho..
If it had a bricked sysnand and it's actually running Emunand, would there be anyway to fix the sysnand if I didn't have a backup of it?

To be more specific, I'm told it boots, but with a black screen if not booted with the RCM loader.

Saw this guide:

I'm not a fan of video-guides, but if what he does actually works, then perhaps there's hope for my switch in case it has a bricked sysnand...?

Perhaps this process is written somewhere, though I'm yet to find it..?

its possible the seller doesnt know wtf he's doing and the system is in autorcm this whole time and thats why it wont boot ofw lol. but you'll know soon enough.

running syscfw, but black screens ofw definitly sounds like autorcm is on, but also possible maybe fuse related if sysnand only boots layered with cfw, since booting fss0 skips fuse checks

So it turned out to be AutoRCM that caused the black screen.

Now I need to figure out if it really is a sysnand install or if it's emunand.

Then Figure out how to restore the switch to stock.

Last edited by Flaya,
Managed to figure out that the CFW is indeed installed on the sysnand.
When booted into CFW I go to system settings and find "13.0.0|AMS 1.2.2|S", telling me it runs Atmosphere.
It's also clogged with the sellers stuff, which I do not want.

How do I make a fresh start from here?

I would try turning off autoRCM and then booting normally. Then just do a factory reset from stock FW.

I am not familiar with autoRCM, so double check with other people first.

Edit: after that, you can format the SD card

I disabled AutoRCM. Now it boots into stock FW unless I'm using the RCM loader. So that's all good.

Is it safe to just factory reset it now? I don't have a backup of the system (That's part of why I want to start fresh), and then just follow a guide here to install Atmosphere again?

Backups are for wimps. If you brick it, just buy another one.

Resetting from stock should be safe, though.

Also, despite what I said, you actually should make a backup after the reset. Making one before would be the safe thing to do.
I would be to impatient to do that, though.
