so today i was casually trying to play a childhood game of mine, skylanders: swap force and my wii u was working fine. but later i went to go take a break and get a snack when i came back to a completely solid pause screen. i couldn't do anything so i thought that by chance, it just crashed or something. so i hard shut down and rebooted it and started playing again but, it happened again! this time i was still playing when suddenly the music started repeating itself and then made the iconic crash buzzing sound, but that's not all. for the first time ever, i saw a completely green screen when it crashed! i can't find anything about this and im completely confused why my wii u is crashing so much today. also if it helps you figure out why, i have tiramisu homebrew on the latest system update, 5.5.5u. im genuinly woried as this is my childhood unit and would hate to have to replace it or learn that it might be on deaths door or something. so can anyone help?

This could be an issue of overheating, meaning dust blockage or a fan issue. Although I doubt it's a fan issue since you never specified anything regarding it. Also don't worry about the green crash screen - crash screens on the Wii U come in all sorts of weird patterns and colors. Probably the most alarming one you'll ever get is purple and black static that looks like someone threw up on your screen :rofl2: Anyways that doesn't signify an actual problem, the most likely issues are from overheating and the Wii U automatically crashes as to avoid taking damage from the heat, OR it could just be the game is unstable :P Happens quite a lot on the Wii U regardless of the game; Binding of Isaac and Darksiders II for instance, they randomly crash when playing. My best advice is if after cleaning the vents and any dust inside try playing the game again, and if it proceeds to crash then try another title. If that title works just fine then we know it's an issue with the game, not the console ;)

Is the game on USB or NAND? Cause beside what others said it could also be unstable USB (brownout) or NAND corruption.
Anyway, my advise would also be to clean the insides of the console first and in case it stil crashes: Try another title.

yeah i just played for about an hour just now and it seems fine but one thing that was different is i had my wiiu gamepad stand and my pro controller on top of it so maybe it was stopping the top vent from breathing idk but it could've just been a coincidence (i had the stuff on top yesterday) also i was concerned about the green screen because before when i had overheat crashes with my wiiu, it kept the game visuals on screen at all times so idk

you'll most likely have overheating if you block the vents. that's when the system shuts off, and the red light keeps blinking. I had this problem until I replaced the fan. it hasn't been an issue since, and that was back in April iirc when I play the system almost every day for like 8 hours or so/day. the system does crash in this event like I said, but the red light should be blinking and the side should be pretty warm if not hot.
