I've been trying to play Final Fantasy I & II: dawn of souls however some weird shit is happening with GbaRunner2. I'm playing on an N3ds XL with Luma and b9s. I've got TWiLightMenu++ Installed from Un. Updater.

What happens is in Final fantasy II (haven't tested one or the other one yet) It goes weird after creating my party. The screen breaks like the background isn't moving and weird lines of textures are everywhere. Then I check the GbaRunner2 menu (can't edit settings) and the bottom of the screen starts doubling up on itself several times in a really weird fashion. I tried Final fantasy tactics advance and the game seemed fine (after exiting and going back into it the screen started doubling up like the GbaRunner2 menu).

Any ideas would be appreciated, I've seen some posts where people say you need a bios.bin but wasn't sure if it applied to me.

Getting a BIOS dump might help, the better solution though is to just use open_agb_firm, VC injects, or mGBA instead of GBARunner.

open_agb_firm and VC injects have more or less perfect compatibility and mGBA is pretty good on n3DS too (bit laggier at times, but has some features the others don't), where GBARunner2 just isn't great by comparison, it's intended more for DSi and DS from a Slot-1 flashcard.

I've used mGba on pc and it was quite good imo. so I looked at open agb and VC injects and VC injects seems to be preferable since I don't want to reboot everytime I want to play a gba game. does mGBA have speed up like on pc or not? in the case it doesn't, should I use mGba or VC injects?

The disadvantages of VC injects are that they store the save data in an inconvenient location that can only be accessed with Godmode9. Also, they take up an extra space on your Home screen. And running a GBA game pretty much reboots your system anyway.

mGBA barely runs at full speed at the best of times. It does not have speed up.

It does have speed up, it is definitely kinda pointless a lot of the time since it struggles to hit 60 FPS to begin with, but in MKSD and Pokémon Sapphire it was like 60~90 FPS when I just tried it, so sometimes up to 1.5x speed or so.

You got a good chance of buying a used one and asking the seller how often they used or even ask for a Pic of fw and telling them not to update
