Both? He has a Patreon and has made many a contribution although I don't know if he's done on any hardware-related contributions.

Drivers and spare Switches in case of ones hardbricking while trying to make drivers.
Original L4T was made for T1, not for T1+. So you must spend more resources to adjust it to Mariko.

And it's even more than that. Switch light has built-in joycon for that ctcaer need to adjust the driver. then the UART ports must be found on the light.
OLED, the display driver must be adapted.
Hekate switches to ATF (Arm Trusted Firmware) no more uboot.
And several other things.
I can highly confirm that the fundraiser are legit. I modded 2 switches for the team.
M4xw has nothing to do whit the Switchroot team.
when sensei ctcer's big work is done, mcinbacon and bylaws can do the adaptations to android.
Azkali, gavindarklider and Ctcaer then customize Linux.
And gavindarklider then ported Lakka to the switch Mariko.
