I found a first gen NDS running v4 firmware (two goldish screens when pulling a game during pictochat).

I have looked long and hard to find info on how to get NDS backups to play and from what I understand I need a flash cart but not which one. Everything I have read says I need a R4i 3DS Gold + but is that correct? Also where should I buy one?

You can use any DS flashcart, and you can easily find them on ebay and Amazon (then it depends on the country you live in) mostly all cheap and equally of poor material, but they do their job and are optimally compatible.

Then you will obviously have to buy a microSD (16/32 GB, if possible of good quality) and a SD-reader/adapter to copy what you call "nds backups" (DS roms) [cough...cough...] from PC to microSD.

Good luck! :)

Awesome. I thought I had to have a special one or something, a lot of random info around. I've got lots of microSD cards around the house.

Now my kids can play the "backups" I have.

One thing to remember is that the firmware doesn’t really matter for the DS/Lite, it’s only with the DSi that it started to become an issue.

However, you may want to consider installing FlashMe purely for it’s anti-brick protection, although be warned this has it’s own risks during initial installation.

As for the Flashcart, there are factors to consider depending on the card:
1) Timebomb (some cards on their stock firmware will not boot after a set date)
2) SDHC support (older ones, such as my M3 Simply only support non-sdhc cards)
3) Third party firmware support (not sure if ysmenu or wood is the go to), especially if 1 is an issue or different games AP
