So i recently bought a hacked new 3ds xl and it got some issues regarding themes. When I changed the theme to black for example, and reboot the system, it doesn't load the theme, and if it does, it would crash to arm11 first, which I then learned to hide exceptions via luma configuration, and then load the theme. Which doesn't break anything, but more of a nuiscance. If I follow the 3dsguide on hacking 3ds from scratch, is it safe? I also notice that my root 3ds folder actually contain another 3ds folder, the luma, gm9, etc.

So what exists on my root are: 3ds, game, Nintendo3DS

Should I just relocate what's inside the root 3ds folder to the root (luma,cia,gm9,etc)?

I'm quite new on this hacking thing so I would really appreciate the help and response, thank youu!

It's not really going to help, but:

There is certainly no harm in reading through the guide so you know what that folder is and why you don't need to move anything inside it.

and do a CTR Transfer to get a clean NAND.
I don't understand why that would help at all?

I agree that a new SD card might be a good idea. How big is the current one? Very large SD cards are known to cause problems with themes.

My current SD size is 128gb so I guess that's the problem?

And thanks for clearing out on relocating folder contents

I’ve had a 256gb in multiple 3ds consoles and never once had an issue with themes..

I honestly have a weird 'fix', but I do want to really fix this issue; so my 'fix' is I need to hold the power button to show the power off prompt on the screen, but instead of powering off I click the home button, which then returns me to home screen with the theme loaded. It's pretty annoying tbh.

Reformat your SD card to FAT32 with 64KB (65536) allocation unit size.

128GB SD cards have issues with themes if its allocation unit size is any lower. Any higher SD card isn't reliable with themes at all regardless of allocation unit size. It was once said that 200GB SD cards (not to be confused with 256GB) works fine with 64KB alloc size as well but it's unconfirmed.

I don't understand how it gives you the option to go to the home menu when it boots to a black screen ( aka Arm11). But you can change or uninstall this theme if your using Anemone, or switch to an official one and see if it boots normally.

Hi guys, to make the problem more clear, I recorded a video on what's going on, here I presented 3 scenarios:

1. Showing the error triggered when I navigate on the games, and changed the theme to test if the state is saved.

2. Rebooting and basically repeat step 1 to know that the state is changed (theme changed to blue)

3. Practicing my "fix" which is holding power button then pressing home screen to immediately change the theme.

I might be trying to reformat my sd later, so to reformat I just need to paste my files from the source sd card to my pc, format it with gui, and then transfer them back to the sd card right?

Btw thanks for the help guys

*Edit: I can't seem to attach the video here, so I uploaded it on youtube, if anyone wants to see it here's the link:

So it gives this error with the stock themes, how did it happen exactly? Have you installed other themes from the internet prior and that maybe've caused this?
Yes, you can backup the contents of the sd card, specially the Nintendo 3DS folder which contains your games & saves. Though you can batch backup your saves with Checkpoint (not necessary but recommended) beforehand as well. You should format it format32gui as fat32 64kb cluster size, and after that test it if it's faulty/ or fake with h2testw.

It's not strictly necessary, but you might want to use Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier to be thorough. (It seems like there are many stories of people with SD cards that work perfectly fine until the day they try to use them on a PC.)

Yes I tried installing custom themes beforehand, and noticed the problem, so I tried removing anemone and the themes, and the issue doesn't go away, the problem first started when I updated luma to the current version (my previous ver. Was 9.1), since at 'stock' this problem already occur (theme reset on boot) but without the error message.

Will try to backup the sd card, thank you for your clear explanation!
