Well… I went ahead and tried Linux on Wii-Linux-NGX.

It took me some hours to set this up.

Stupid errors and problems. Step by step solving each obstacle… feeling like loosing my mind.

And after everything was ready, mplayer opened CDDA – sort of. For whatever reason the audio was very choppy. No notable CPU usage whatsoever.
Problems with the drive? Incompatible? I gotta try another distro as well. For now I feel like this:

Setting up this wasn't too easy.
  1. Flash image to SD with dd
  2. Realize it is a minimal system containing only the basics
    • Not every USB keyboard worked for me and only on USB port 1, not on port 0
  3. Trying to download things with apt
    • wrong URL for the repos
    • problems with wired(!) network
    • root partition full (only 300MB)
  4. Resize Partition with gparted
  5. Get mplayer
    • Trying to download basic stuff with apt
    • network problems (Why ???) – Couldn't get WiFi connected at all and Ethernet was buggy
    • generating URL list for downloading with wget on main PC
    • dpkg -i *.deb

Conclusion: Play CDs on another device than a Wii.

CDs use an infrared laser and DVDs use a red laser. Most drives have both, so they're able to read both formats. If the drive doesn't have both, there's no way to make it read both formats.
I didn't find reliable information about this. Are there really two laser diodes within the same optic system? A DVD drive only has one lens. BD drives have two lenses – one for BD and the other for CD/DVD.
Having two different wavelengths for two different pit sizes sounds reasonable though.

Is your Wii Black?
The Wii model won't make a difference here. None of them will read CDs.

It's hard to find good info by googling it.
I found these:
http://www.danyk.cz/laser_en.html
http://www.danyk.cz/laser3_en.html
As you can see from the pictures in the second one, both lasers shine through the same lens, so at first glance it looks like there's only one laser, the pictures show where the actual lasers are located, but it's hard to tell that's what they are.
