WiiMC is the app, and only older wii's are capable of reading discs that aren't official wii/gc discs. But on newer wii's WiiMC can still play music off of USB, SD, or even a folder shared on the LAN
Ive Got that installed but it says error reading disk.. whats a man gotta do to listen to hendrix on a wii

Older Wii drives can read DVD-ROM, DVD-R and DVD+R (bootype set to DVD-ROM). RW types might work, but unlikely to be useful.

The drives are strictly DVD only (Nintendo optical discs are very similar to DVDs). None of them will read CD-R(W) or CD-ROM.

How about ModChips, will any of them read CD's
Never heard of something like this. The laser has to focus on a different area (depth) for reading CDs. For CDs the data layer is very near to the label side (never scratch a CD from the label side -- guaranteed to be deadly for the disc) while the data layer for DVDs is in the middle. DVDs are like a glued "sandwich"

Just tried again. Click, click, click. The drive can't focus. That noise is exactly when the lens (!) moves up and down trying to find the data layer.

Another nope, probably an IOS and software "issue" (can't call it an issue since it isn't intended to work): An external USB CD drive is not detected by Wii-MC-SS and/or WiiXplorer.

If somebody has a working Wii Linux installation and an external CD drive: Please try if it plays CDDA. Of course this is useless beyond any description. But it would be fun!
