I have to say, I'm happy Sony is rolling this out soon. Filling up the 667Gb of the PS5 was extremely easy... Seeing as how the world is lately with things becoming out of stock, I jumped on an NVMe already. I went with the Aorus 7000s, I had been eyeing it for awhile, and its specs seem to be inline with what Sony's Guidelines state (and also i read the Seagate 530 article that mentioned the use of the E18 mem controller) Hopefully I chose wisely.

Looks like most of these will run about $250 (including heatsink) for 1TB. Found the 500GB Western Digital drive with heatsink for $140 on Newegg.
I ran out of space on just game installs and updates on Disc Versions. I'm always constantly deleting data to play new stuff.

A decent size would be 2tb. But that's $400 for menory that meets Sony strict specific requirements.

That $500 console ain't cheap. And the memory Sony gave us is laughable on Firmware updates alone that takes a big chunk of it.

Grabbed a Western Digital SN850 500GB from eBay for $100. Heatsink for $10 from Amazon. I figure a little over 1TB total should be enough for me, since I only buy PS exclusives and the occasional game that's EGS exclusive on PC.

Only PS5 games or games that've had a PS5 upgrade go on my internal SSD, I've got a 1TB external HDD for all my PS4 stuff. So it hasn't really been a problem for me, I have 250GB free on both, though it'll be about 50GB less on the SSD with Ghost of Tsushima's upgrade.

It's not at all convoluted, the speed requirements are just high. Like all hardware, the prices will drop as newer generations are released.

I mean the installation process, finding the right size plus heatsink, that's convoluted. I don't care about the price, I care about the installation process and what drives can or can't fit.

It's just 2280, which is a pretty standard size for m.2 SSDs. Same for the heatsink, you can just search "2280 heatsink" on Amazon. Ultimately though it's easiest to stick with the brands and models listed in the OP, since those are the only ones verified to be fast enough so far. 1TB is gonna run you about $200, and 500GB about $100. Not much getting around that until sales start kicking in.

Installation process still sucks though

I find it a bit annoying that I can't just install the SSD now in advance of the update. The PS5 won't even boot until you remove it.

That's a downgrade from PC where you can have deactivated drives installed.

Doesn't even boot, eh? That is quite silly, it should just ignore it until the update arrives.

I have the same set up as yours. A 1tb hdd for ps4. and I ran out of space for both.

Seem safer to just use an external HD but maybe that's just me

The problem is speed.

The PS5’s USB 3.1 Gen 2 USB ports can deliver up to 10 Gbps, which is 1250 MB/S. A suitable internal M.2 SSD can deliver around 5500-7000MB/S (seq read).

Sony would likely have opted for something like MS’s solution if it was external, which long term may be worse for consumers as prices inevitably come down on off the shelf M.2 SSDs.
