Nintendo 3DS gets a new firmware update for version 11.14.0-46

dims.jpg

2020 hasn't been the most stable year, but at least Nintendo is hard at work making sure that above all else, the Nintendo 3DS is the most stable thing in your life during these trying times. The system has just received a brand new firmware update, the first of 2020, to be exact, bringing the revision number to 11.14.0-46. Currently, the yls8 page shows us that a few changes were made regarding the web browser, NATIVE_FIRM, and more. The official changelog from Nintendo says the oh so popular phrase you've come to love:
  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.
Considering the random nature of this update, and the first few initial claims of those that took the plunge already, you might want to hold off on updating for right now, if you value having homebrew on your console. Reports state that Luma3DS is crashing, and that BrowserHax has been patched.

Hmm... even with the luma update, the 3DS I'm working on is only showing a black screen on boot. Anything I might have missed?

Not to my knowledge, but to be safe I've already tested them and couldn't any issues.

Finally went through the title list on the update one by one and it looks like they haven't. Though I wonder if github and sites that use Lets Encrypt certificates will work now since the SSL module was updated.

was this really to stop hackers from pirating games? that's what really pisses me off about Nintendo. they sell what 26-28 million mario kart 8's on the switch, several times more than final fantasy vii remake sold, yet they still think virtually everyone is pirating on their systems, so they won't add features, just hurdles.

Nope, it won't. This was a remote browser exploit which was patched because it could be exploited by a malicious website, no different than when they patched the streetpass exploit which could be used to remotely brick systems. The only reason Luma broke is because it relies on patching specific code patterns which will often change whenever a new kernel comes out, if you have ever played Fallout 4 or Skyrim on PC with mods then you know how after a game update you have to wait for F4SE/SKSE to be updated to match.

Also, one weird thing that I noticed is that the github download link (not url, the link that you see in Chrome's downloads page via CTRL + J) uses Amazon's AWS, but GitHub is owned by microsoft, and doesnt MS have their own server infastructure?

I have never had problems with CFW
Sure, maybe you haven't. Maybe most people haven't – there's certainly no disputing that a lot of fine work has gone into Luma and everything else. But there's still people coming into these forums every day because they managed to run into one kind of problem or another.

Cause the eshop still makes them a fortune I would guess.
Freeshop's long been dead, and all the times I've downloaded CIAs from the 'net, you can't buy DLC with titles you haven't legitimately bought.
Might be a region thing, though - I could dump one of my own games as a CIA, transfer that file to a different New 3DS XL, install it, and then purchase DLC using it.

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

Nothing special about it other than it's more comfortable than the Lite

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

    but that's a long shot

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.
  • AncientBoi @ AncientBoi:
    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

  • cearp @ cearp:
@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
