Hello! I'm saving up for a Nintendo Switch that I plan on modding to use homebrew as well as backup loaders and I have a few questions.

1) Would it be better to just get a exploitable Switch or get a non-exploitable Switch for when an exploit gets released later? I don't mind waiting for an exploit or a modchip to be released, but at the same time, I don't want to get a Nintendo Switch and not be able to do the things I want to do with it. (Install Android, backup my cartridges). I know that there were gonna be Switch Lite/Patched Switch modchips released by Team Xecuter but unfortunately those were delayed. Would I be able to do all the things I want to do with a modchipped switch as opposed to a exploitable Switch.

2) What's a decently sized MicroSD card? I don't want to put all of my games on my Switch at once, I'd rather only have games I am actively playing. Maybe 4 or 5 games at the maximum but I also want to install Android and run emulators mobile apps that way.

3) What method would require the least amount of work every time I boot my device? I'd prefer if I didn't have to plug in a USB dongle every time I want to turn my system on, if possible. What'd be the most idiot-proof way to ensure I don't get accidentally get banned?

I would like to be able to get a modded Switch as soon as possible so any feedback you can leave would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

1. I assume most people here will recommend an exploitable switch as there is no guarentee that you will be able to get your hands on a modchip for the newer models. You can also wait to see if an open source modchip is released after people get their hands on the new modchips as someone is likely to reverse engineer them.

2. You will need to look at the sizes of the games you want to play to determine what a good size would be. Personnally, I'd never recommend anything below 64GB.

3. Provided you only put the switch into sleep mode and don't fully power it off, you won't need to inject a payload with a USB everytime you want to use it. Otherwise, there are products which act as portable payload injectors and even an android app which does the same thing. I assume the new modchips won't require this but you never know. As for bans, make sure you only ever use homebrew and such in an emummc, which is essentially a copy of your sysnand and ensures that it stays 'clean'.

Get a fusee vulnerable one if you have a choice. Fusee Gelee is more powerful than the exploit being used on the new modchips + you can still install a modchip if you want (if you want untethered).

How is it more powerful? Will I not be able to do things like install Android if I just get a Red Box Switch and just mod chip that? Also, is there a particular place I can reliably get an exploitable Switch?

There are plenty of exploitable switches all over eBay. Just make sure to check their serial number from either a picture of the console or the description to be sure you're getting an exploitable one. You might need to buy the tablet only and then buy joy cons and a dock seperately, but it depends on if you can find a good deal.

(I'm guessing the modchips won't use the RCM exploit in any way so old payloads might won't work anymore, including the existing android for switch. Could be wrong however as I haven't looked how the modchips work so don't take that as fact.)

You are too late but I wish you the best to find one. A hackable version is very expensive because they knew people like you are looking for it and the price is higher than you thought. Have fun then. :)

Honestly if you MUST get a Switch now, I would go for a RCM exploitable one.
But if you can just wait a bit longer, I would check how well the modchip from Xecuter works. If it works mighty fine, get a Redboxed Switch with the better battery life.

That's exactly why I wondering if it would be necessary to get an exploitable Switch with what I want to do with it. And I'm most certainly not going to buy a Switch now with prices spiked higher than the ballet box.

Well that'd be a bummer. I guess I'll have to wait and see what Team Xecuter's mod chip can do and hope Android works because that's a big reason why I want a modded Switch to begin with.

I think I'll wait and see what Team Xecuter has up their sleeve once this pandemic thing blows over and see whether getting a modchip would be worth it for what I want to use my Switch. If not, I'll just have to shell out the money to get an RCM-exploitable switch.

"Do you guys not have phones?" (regarding Android on switch)

I do have a phone but I would much rather have a dedicated gaming device. The Switch already has a decent enough library and once you add things like N64 and GameCube emulation, streaming from my PC as well as the massive library of games on Android, it would make the Switch a perfect dedicated handheld. Especially with TV connectivity.

But when it comes down to it, I dunno. I just have an obsession of running software on hardware it's not meant to be run on.

Look on eBay, you want to buy the tablet on its own there’s still a few rcm-exploitable units out there all you then need to do is to buy the joycons, job done!

Fusee is earlier in the boot process.
You won't be able to use android/linux on the red box & lite systems without changes to android/linux, for unrelated reasons (They use different hardware, and as such some things need to be changed). Once those changes are made, sure, android/linux will work.
