GameStop will be closing down over 300 of its stores this year

GameStop sure has managed to grab headlines lately--with their adamant stance of being labeled as an essential business, and the eventual backing down as they closed their doors days following the launch of two major game releases: Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons--now the brick and mortar retailer has yet another announcement to make. GameStop will permanently be closing down over 300 locations this year. A quarterly earnings report showed that the company actually managed to turn a profit this quarter, to the tune of $21 million, even though overall sales were down compared to the same timeframe in 2019. Overall, for the entire fiscal year, GameStop lost $187.7 million. This has led executives to the decision to "de-densify", by closing "around" 320 locations by the end of this year.

Gosh, people applauding this are so clueless. The one and last dedicated brick and mortar gaming store is in trouble and all you can do is have glee about it? How will a reduction in competition and another forced drive towards digital (where you do NOT own games) amongst a myriad of other issues such as high pricing, account issues and draconian rules in terms of refunds etc ever be good for the end consumer?

Its sad to see humanity so utterly, desperately ignorant towards what's actually good for itself, as long as they get to make an inconsequential point.

P.s: Also, you utter geniuses, people who worked for gamestop can't just go out and find jobs anywhere, if they could, they wouldn't be working for gamestop. Come on. Oh the face palm.

Reggie better start looking for work he didn't last long

I can't figure out how he went from Nintendo to Gamestop. But I bet he got a few million in retirement when he left Nintendo.

Did you take a survey and find this out scientifically? That's utter bullshit and this cononavirus will blow over and they will find work. Most of them are young college students who just used that job for extra income. No one who's not management is "making a living" at Gamestop. You could work for a gas station and make more money.

Jokes aside I do feel for the employees at those stores. These are tough times right now for everyone, and while I’ve definitely experienced my share of bad GameStop employees, I’ve met a few good people at GameStop who just love gaming, and want to help people have the best gaming experience possible. Hope they all land on their feet!
Someone speaking sense yeh its like all places yr gonna get good staff and shit staff - some people here act like gamestop are a group of terrorists

I like how people here are so pro Gamestop employees who are making minimum wage. That means the minimum allowed by law that's what they're getting paid. It's ok if people in the restaurant business lose their jobs oh but not precious Gamestop they sell video games they matter more to me. Wake up.

They under-pay their employees, they give shitty store credit on trade-ins, and they charge as much as possible for games. I can't believe anyone with a brain would defend that place.

Minimum wage or not, the store is still providing an income to those employees. They're definitely not a good company to work, or shop, for. But there are still good people who work there, so why shouldn't we feel bad if they lose their jobs? Also show me one person who thinks a restaurant closing/staff losing their job is okay.

I wasn't referring to the employees. I mean they can find another job but God bless them. Im talking about defending Gamestop and acting like some horrible thing has been done to humanity that they're shutting down some stores.

I remember when I was about 20 I had gotten hired by Gamestop and they told me I had to sell a certain amount of magazine subscriptions and I would be given no commission. Yeah I never actually worked my first day there after being told that.

Also the last straw for me as a customer was that they let employees take home a brand new game and play it, and they would sell the game as "new" ridiculous.

I wont miss them, half the time I go there to buy a Switch game, I come home with a box featuring no cart and only a download code so...
...if they ain't going to sell physical, I might as well stay home and buy from the freaking eShop, or Amazon that at least makes it well known weather or not a cart is actually in the box or not.

What a rollercoaster year for ol' Gamestop. I know they tend to "rip you off" in terms of trade-ins. But I still liked going there. They were giving me decent deals on older games recently.

I was not inclined to get into a dung slinging match with you to begin with, then I read the "scientific survey" thing. How uneducated and ridiculous a person must you be. Anyways, stay safe, I am not wasting time on you after this no matter what you say.

Ok then bye bye. I won't lose any sleep over it. I mean how smart can you be if you think Gamestop is a great place.

How many stores does GameStop have in total btw? Just curious for a sense of perspective.

300 won't be that many for them, I feel like they're damn near everywhere. I have a mall near me that used to have two Gamestops, literally in the same mall. There's at least two other Gamestops in my city, and there's another one right around the corner from where I work (I commute to another city daily.)

I think GameStop could do wonders if it did more to cater to Retro fans. All of the new games are pushing digital distribution. Even if you buy a physical game now, it's not uncommon to have to download part of it when you bring it home. If Gamestop didn't destroy all of the packaging from all of the old games people used to bring in, I bet they'd be in a much better position now. I'd love for them to start pushing old out-of-print cartridges.

I googled it, there are 5830 in all countries they operate in. 300 isn't nothing, but it's also not a lot for them.

From what I know about GameStop, while living in a country that doens't have a GameStop (or at least, not nearby), they seem to be failing at their biggest strengths by trying to force only one (Second hand games as a market) while overlooking the others in favor of pushing aggressive consumer reward programs that I have never seen anyone speak positive of online.

Over here we have a store called Game Mania. Their biggest "shtick" is that they have a lot of merchandise aside from a lot of second hand games, usually stuff that's otherwise pretty rare to get (ie. they afaik currently have one of those special colored Wiis for sale as well as a few of the limited run 3DSes and the first time I went to them they had the Dark Souls 3 limited edition with the special thingies that were originally preorder bonuses, around 2 years after DkS3 came out) and official merchandise.

Like, brick and mortar game stores aren't dead, but if you run them like GameStop does, they might as well be. They have strenghts when it comes to selling rare things that you don't neccessarily have online (I don't have to be afraid that I get scammed for purchasing something in a game store the way I could get scammed by purchasing from the guy on ebay who is totes legit).

@MadonnaProject you don't have to reply but I gotta call you out for calling Nintendo selfish for not doing repairs during COVID-19. I guess video games are just more important to you than anything even human lives and you call me dumb.
