So I very recently went through the process of installing custom firmware on my 3DS XL, seemingly without a hitch, using the "3DS hacks" guide. But, I've run into an issue that I wanted some advice for.

When I download and place .CIA files into the "cias" folder in my SD card, there is no problem. Unless, that is, the .CIA was originally a broken file that I had to recombine through 7zip.

What irritates me is that games that I downloaded in one piece function perfectly fine, for testing I downloaded Super Mario 3D World and Majora's Mask into my 3DS and they work.

This has happened every time I try and install Pokemon X, Ultra Sun, and Super Mystery Dungeon, and I get he same error:

Summary: Out of Resource (5)
Module: FS (17)
Desc: Partition Full (210)

From my limited knowledge, all I can guess is that I do not have enough space; which is highly unlikely. I am using a 4GiB SD card, with only Mario 3D World installed, and the tools used in the 3DS hacks guide. This still did not work with PKMN Super Mystery Dungeon, which cost about 1.4-1.7GiB.

For reference, in-case someone asks, I combined the broken .CIA files by placing the zipped documents in one file, then highlighted them all and selected "Extract here", which produced one .CIA file with no errors given.

Thanks for the help in advance

You have to understand you need double the files space to install it.

Say mystery dungeon is on your card at 1.4gb
You need to have another 1.4gb system space to install it

1.4gb for the file and 1.4gbgb for the install as it essentially copies the file.

If you copy a 1.4gb file to sd and had 1.3gb free it would still fail

You need a bigger card man only other solution is to network install directly to the sd

Say you have a 2.2gb file
You need to have 4.4gb system space to install it

Ah damn, should've thought of that.

I'll look for a larger SD card.

Thanks for the speedy reply man!

Yep exactly as @squee666 said you need double the size for instance you said you tried pokemon x. Pokemon x is 1.7 gb so you need at least 3.4gb space on the sd card to install it. For the 3ds you will really need to get yourself a bigger sd card at least 32gb to have more than a few games on it.

Did you double check the space remaining on the card? If you're installing and deleting, you still need double the space of the CIA for the install.

EDIT: Got ninja'd

I mean, I can currently get a 16GiB for £6.49, and seeing as i'll need <4GiB for left for a larger game I think that's pretty good.

I'm not the kind to keep games I've finished installed for as long as I can, so I'm happy to uninstall them on my SD card, and keep a back-up of the game on my computer just in-case.

But I'm obviously new to this and open to advice.

Thanks

Yep that is an option only issue being large 3ds games take a bloody age to install but if thats not a concern for you each time you swiych games then go ahead and use the 16gb one

Yeah, I know, I just blasted my Saturday afternoon trying to get these games to work, and now I couldn't even play them after I downloaded them, haha. At least they're ready to be placed into my SD card when I get a new one.

On a side note, I have also read here that fake SD cards are prolific even through trusted shops. Is a online retailer like "My Memory" (which is where I scouted the mentioned 16GiB SD card) good, or do I need to just trust chain electronic stores?

Not overly keen on the latter as I know from experience that they are really expensive.

that seems expensive when you can get 32gb for the same price

https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-mi...?keywords=32gb+micro+sd&qid=1582494069&sr=8-3

or 64gb for £8
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Mo...?keywords=64gb+micro+sd&qid=1582494095&sr=8-5

micro sds have dropped hard in price in the years
