A big SD card is significantly more expensive. A 2TB hard drive (The highest SX supports iirc) can cost as low as $50. Meanwhile a 512GB SD (Literally 1/4th of the storage) is $100. A 2TB SD is close to $440. If you dont care about playing on the go (The last time I went portable was three months ago) SXOS is both cheaper and easier (Drag & Drop vs install) for mass game storage.
Of course HDDs are gonna be a lot cheaper, but how much space do you really need? I have a 512GB SD card in mine and that seems to be plenty right now. All that extra space is not worth anything if it's not gonna be used for anything worthwhile anyway. I think it's worth paying $50 more for the convenience. And by the time you need more space, bigger cards will have gone down in price a lot.
But I guess that's subjective.

SX OS is definitely the best choice. USB loading and xci is the way to go. No doubt about it

I've been saying that since TX brought those 2 features out, for

you can never have enough storage, look at some of the sizes of games , The Witcher 3 for example 32gb ! if you kept some of the classic switch games on there your 512GB will soon be filled up

I've got a 400gb SD card which is full, any new games I put on to see if my son likes it or not, if not I delete it (thats the good thing about XCI - just delete it, no need to uninstall)

talking about game sizes Asgards Warth VR for the PC 130gb :O

Nope.. I use a 4TB external 2.5" WD USB HDD with no issues (other than it taking a long time to register all XCI images if I have a lot of them on there). I formatted the HDD to FAT32 using EaseUS partition manager for Windows.

and the reason I bought it is because ya never know with some of the RCM loafers out there if there gunna be any good cause the one I bought is through wish..(which is ok) but usually the crap on there is cheap
But don't forget, sx pro dongle uses condensators instead of an battery. I read a few comments that they break after a week. Which of course doesn't mean that this is always the case.

most VR PC games are less than a few gig but Asgards Wrath looks to be the first Killer VR PC game :)

back to Switch Storage , USB storage and XCI files are the only reasons I still use SX.

Yup, it's very simple, which is why I will ashtrays prefer sxos, as opposed to atmosphere. Since you have the pro is even easier. just drag/ drop the file from the zip to your SD card and your ready to go. Make sure your card is exfat formatted since you'll probably (should) be using XCI backups instead of nap backups

Make a nand back up first, then transfer it off your SD card to your pc

Then make a emunand. I prefer files to instead of hidden partition, but it's up to you to decide which one you'll be comfortable doing

Click the emunand enabled and auto rcm buttons, then your set and ready to go!

Your a hero! Haha thank you! And with emunand enabled I’ll be about to play offline and with it not on I’ll be able to play online? Right?... I mean honestly I’ll prolly never play online anyway but I’d rather not get banned if I have the option not too

Hey no problem, I'm glad that I could help/clarify things for you.

To answer your questions:
Yes, but you have to make sure you're choosing the selections.

When you first boot into SXOS, the menu presents you with different booting options. In order to use offline emunand, make sure you're selecting Emunand Enabled and Boot Custom FW.
To go back to online Original FW, disable emunand and click Boot Original FW.

In the future, say you previously booted OFW for online usage (fortnite, warframe, Nintendo eshop, etc.) and now you need/want to go back to your offline emunand, make sure you re-enable your emunand BEFORE selecting Boot Custom FW.
If you don't, you'll be booting SXOS into your system NAND, which might leave traces and flag your console the next time you go online in sysnand. Some users boot sxos CFW directly into their sysnand and haven't been banned yet, but it's better to be safe than sorry, which is why Emunand exist in the first place.

I have 2 Switches: 1 with SX OS and 1 with Atmosphere. Each has it's pros and cons, but I prefer SX OS for ease of use and loading xcis off of an external USB. There's always going to be the debate of free vs paid cfw, but in the end the decision is yours.

Dumb question, why haven't atmosphere made the ability to load XCI files?
I mean since people always talks about it getting updates etc.. :/

Since you actually own and use both CFW, I think you're one of the few to actually qualify to answer this question:

What are the advantages to using atmosphere over sxos, besides being the first to having updates and it being free?

To me, other than those two advantages, I can't see why anyone would use atmosphere. I'm asking because you would be educated in both and have an unbiased opinion

Because while installing NSPs could theoretically have legitimate uses (like homebrew NSPs and forwarders), XCI files are pretty much strictly used for piracy, as they are game cartridge dumps and obviously no homebrew has been released on a game cartridge.

XCI loading is the small difference between Atmosphere being a CFW that enables homebrew, LayeredFS, cheats, sigpatches, sysmodules, etc., and being a piracy tool. Note that by default Atmosphere doesn't come with the sigpatches you need to install and run pirated NSPs either.

SXOS doesn't have atmosphere's feature of loading sysmodules. People outside of atmosphere can create system features like ftp in the background, emulate amiibo, overclocking, etc., and users can install them independently or not as they please. TX have to add/steal those features themselves if/when they want them and bake them into their CFW releases. This is a result of them being a closed source product that also is guarding their license for XCI loading.

Right now the new dreamcast retroarch core doesn't run on SXOS either. Although that might be fixed eventually if they can be bothered to copy the atmosphere changes that support it.

I can't really think of any advantages of Atmosphere over SX OS, except for the fact that it's free. It seems to me like SX OS is just easier to use too. When an update comes out, just drag and drop 1 new file to your sd card and that's it. With Atmosphere there's a little more to it than that, like getting new sig patches.

EDIT: The post before mine outlines more advantages that I didn't think of :)

If you care about online play go for Atmosphere EmuMMC. SX OS is closed source, so we can't know how effective their emuNAND solution is.
If you care about homebrew, sysmodules and all that, go for Atmosphere. SX OS has many compatibilty issues with homebrew and doesn't have sysmodules afaik.
If you care about a convenient drag and drop solution for piracy, go for SX OS. Atmosphere is harder to setup for piracy, and does not have XCI loading and never will.

Something to remember:
SX OS can be used for free, only things locked behind a paywall are XCI afaik.

If you don't care about online play:
Use both. The is literally no downside for this.

Personally:
I never saw a reason to use SX OS. However, piracy was never my goal when hacking my switch.

As said by Josshy0125
There is no "Best CFW".
There will never be unless there is only 1 CFW that gets updated.

Also, this. Just drag and drop Atmospheres release to your root, and run sigpatches updater. So instead of drag and dropping a file, you drag and drop multiple files, (same thing), and then run a homebrew.

Please tell me if there is something I missed, I don't want to be biased.

Ahhh I see!
But correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know if this is correct or not since I haven't installed anything in my switch yet...

But when using XCI files does that mean that we can boot the game directly from the SD card without installing it in the Nintendo Switch console?

And when installing NSP files does that mean that we also run the game through the SD card or do we install in the switch system??
What happens if switch storage runs out of we want to install another game?
And if install the games directly to the switch console, is it really necessary to buy a large SD card? Wouldn't 64 GB be enough just to transfer and install the game??

op good choice in getting sx as it’ll suit your use case but i strongly suggest to setup an atmosphere emummc as well to keep all your bases covered
you can setup hekate options to boot into either sx emunand or atmos emummc completely independently as well as stock for online stuff
sx are pretty slow in supporting new firmwares of late which maybe an issue down the line one day
also there’s the one off kind of issues like flycast working only on atmosphere as well
best scenario is to have both cfws available so you get all features available depending on what you want to do and not worry if one is better than the other

With NSPs you generally get to choose whether you want them installed to the console versus the SD card.

What happens if switch storage runs out of we want to install another game?
Like any other modern console, you can either delete games you aren't playing to free up space, or buy a bigger microSD card.

And if install the games directly to the switch console, is it really necessary to buy a large SD card? Wouldn't 64 GB be enough just to transfer and install the game??
The Switch has 32gb of internal memory, the OS takes around 2gb of that. If you can fit the games you want in 30gb of storage space, feel free to do so.

It's worth noting that you should look into emuMMC, where you take a copy of your NAND on your microSD card and run the Switch directly from it, rather than internal memory. Many people are using a Clean SysNAND / Dirty emuNAND setup to play with CFW while retaining the ability to safely play online without bans.

Ohhh I think I get it! So it's possible to install the NSP files in the SD card instead of Switch internal storage?
And when we have installed the NSP file we can delete the NSP in the SD card and still be able to play since it created a new folder for that game?

Yea that is that I was thinking to do. First make a clean backup of everything, later install a EmuNAND. My switch is still on Sysnand version 3.0.1 and I want to keep it like that in case we get a cold boot in the future so we don't need to use the Jig anymore :)

Yes, exactly.

If you upgrade to 4.1.0, you can use PegaScape. This will allow you to boot into a fully-updated emuNAND without using a jig. Some people on 4.1.0 use two emuNANDs, one kept as close to stock as possible so they can play online, while the other one they install NSPs and run cheats and hacks, etc. on.

BE CAREFUL! I personally haven't used PegaScape, but I know that if you're on 4.1.0 and go online without everything set up the right way, you'll end up with an update nag that will prevent you from getting to the browser and ultimately prevent you from using PegaScape. So if you choose to go this route, proceed with caution! The big advantage of course is that in the end you're able to boot EmuNAND with CFW on your Switch without a jig or payload dongle. A downside is that you will need a wifi connection in order to launch PegaScape, so you're effectively replacing the jig and payload dongle with wifi.
