Windows 10 HEVC codec for Free!

~~NOTICE~~ THIS NO LONGER WORKS. JUST GO AND USE VLC ~~NOTICE~~

So If you have Installed / Upgraded to Windows 10 lately you may have noticed something missing if you use the HEVC codec. That is Micro$oft now charges you $0.99 (£0.75) to download it and use it. Now you could just go and download a codec pack or VLC but if you want to use the inbuilt app well you just have to fork over the small amount of cash for the codec... or do you?

There is infact a free version of this codec on the M$ store that isn't indexed and can't be found searching the store that is intended for device manufacturers. Simply click the link below and install and you're done. No checks no need to pay even a penny.

CCCP these days does use LAVFilter. I installed it on a PC the other day and it's completely changed from when I last used it on one of my own PCs.

I used to think VLC was somehow inferior to using codec packs with something like MPC-HC but VLC has come a long way since then and there's nothing it can't handle.
Yea, mpc was much > vlc around the h264 10 bit time, since then it's come a long way, I use only vlc now.

It stutters, frequently plays videos as if they're corrupted (whole screen artifacts), and is minimally aesthetic. Mpc is beautiful, has great and intuitive interface, and excellent performance. Unfortunately I have to use vlc on my Debian laptop because mpc is only for windows. My desktop has both Debian and windows, and vlc glitches for both for whatever reason. I used vlc back in the day, but once I found klite I've never looked back.
VLC player works flawlessly with DVDs and video files just fine. Your computer's probably infected with malware. What the deuce are you trying to load, 8K Red Camera video files?

I also use VLC. Initially I had to make a change or two in the settings to get 4k content to play smoothly, but now no issues. This specifically allows Windows apps to display/use high-res content. IIRC, Barnacules over on YouTube mentions in a recent video that the Windows HEVC encoder has better native performance than what you'd most likely see in VLC, so this plugin does matter. Shame on MS for plucking it out of the OS (it used to come with Win10) and charging $1 for it! And good thing there's a link to a free OEM version. I'd suggest people who want to, capture the URL during install for the .APPX file and download it for safekeeping, too.

Why people still use Windows after all that bloatware it has in Windows 10, the OS is almost unusable... Some menus open up with that Metro UI, and some open up as normal windows... Some apps install themselves automatically without permission (e.g. Candy Crush)... The OS takes so much space especially after a few updates... And who knows how much data this OS gathers after all that cortana thing and the need to sign in using microsoft account in order to use many features...

Linux has many variants that are so easy to use (Such as Ubuntu and Linux Mint), I do not see any reason to use Windows other than gaming (Well at least until the DXVK/Proton project for Linux improves, then we no longer need Windows)..

Microsoft wouldn't take this bloatware path if they weren't losing money...

I wonder how the next Windows will be... A bloatware with a small OS in it... :rofl2:
