Hi, I'm planning to buy a Nintendo switch and I'm interested in jailbreaking.
After a research I found that cfw is possible in every firmware version except ipatched switch versions, right?
Jailbreaking ipatched devices is completely impossible right?
Is there any way to determine if a device is ipatched or not? (for example production date)

It is now possible CFW ipatched ones, but only up to FW 4.1.0 IIRC. Also, pretty sure RCM hacks aren't jailbreaking, since they are temporary. Be aware that any mod can and will give you a ban. Unless you use EmuNAND you will get a ban.

Hi and thank you for your info!
So I search for everything not ipatched or ipatched with FW max 4.1.0?
What IIRC stands for?
Also does cfw require extra devices or chips? (except for micro SD etc)
I'm not planning to play online etc so it's not a problem for now.

Save yourself a lot of headaches and just get a non-patched system. If you mess up a patched system it may no longer be possible to hack it. WIth a non-patched system you have the safety of NAND dumps to roll back to.

IIRC = If I Remember Correctly

If you want to hack your Switch, you need one of the following:
  1. An unpatched Switch (can be on any system version)
  2. A patched Switch on 4.1.0 that has never connected to the internet before (if it's on 4.1.0 but has connected to the internet, it probably has a browser supernag that makes hacking it impossible)
If you don't already have a Switch, it is highly recommended that you purchase an unpatched one. You should always check the serial number before making a purchase.

I've looked around for a while and haven't found a solid answer; are ipatched units different in their software or their hardware from non-ipatched units?

It should be treated as a hardware difference.

More specifically though, it's a difference in the bootrom, which can't be altered.

... I appreciate the reply but I have to admit that just made it more confusing

is the hardware actually different? I'm guessing there aren't 2 versions of every firmware e.g. 5.0.0 ipatched and 5.0.0 for non ipatched.

do you happen to have any references?

The bootrom is different, which is technically software. However, the bootrom cannot be altered once the Switch leaves the factory, so it should be treated as a hardware difference. That's why unpatched units cannot be patched with a software update.

Your console is definitely patched! That's a bummer!

Possible firmware version out of the box: 2.3.0

-- So yeah. Should work if it is 2.3.0

According to the post:
Serials between XAJ40000000000 - XAJ40046000000 are safe to buy
So how it's definitely patched?

Edit: I didn't bought it yet

Required for first time entering RCM mode, then you can enable autoRCM if it is an unpatched unit.
Yes it is unpatched unit. So it has to be in the switch when i first boot into RCM.
Is there any way to avoid that? I just can't wait about a month to receive one from the internet :P also i dont want to risk my new switch :(

That we can't you with with the waiting time for a jig to arrive, you can always use tinfoil even though it is not recommended.

Is the RCM jig necessary or just a shortcut to enter RCM?
You need to use one of these methods to enter RCM: https://gbatemp.net/threads/the-ultimate-list-of-mods-to-enter-rcm.502145/

If you can enter RCM one time, then you can load Hekate and install AutoRCM. This will cause your Switch to coldboot into RCM each time it is powered on after being completely powered off, and you won't need to use a jig ever again.

I personally like the paperclip method. If you have the correct sized paperclip, it's pretty easy.
