Homebrew n00b help from pretty much square one

I got a freebie O3DSXL under the pretense that it's "bricked" due to a bad mod, and I'd like to see if there's anything I can do to get it working. I've softmodded consoles before but not the 3DS. I do have an old Gateway 3DS card from my now-dead O3DSXL if that helps fix this thing. It had an SD card with some setup done, but I'm n00 so I'm not entirely sure where in the process it was, etc. I've done some Googling without any real luck, but I'll try and give as much info as I can. It looks like there was a recent attempt to hard-flash CFW onto the device, and this failed.

- On boot without SD Card, I get an ARM9 Prefetch Abort
- Holding START on power-up, I can get to Fastboot3DS v1.2 - This can be done without SD card installed
- Holding SELECT on power-up, I can get to Luma3DS 9.1 - This cannot be done without SD card installed, only when it's booted with SELECT and the card is in
- Holding L on power-up also gives this error, so a bad CFW flash onto the hardware may had taken place
- Fastboot3DS when trying "Continue boot" goes back the ARM9 error

Is this thing totally shithoused? Can anything be done to get it working again? Ultimately, I'd like to play .CIA games, hopefully it's not totally messed up.

I - Redo the SD card setup.

3ds CFW: Restoring functionality on a new SD card [post #2]

• Copy everything off the SD card over to a computer.
• Reformat in FAT32 + 32 KB cluster size with Windows File Explorer or guiformat (if bigger than 32 GB).
• Full Write + Verify the empty card using H2testw. Test for hardware defects.
• Build a reference test setup with the CFW starter kit.

II - Backup the SysNAND *.bin image (for safety).

• Creating a NAND backup

III - Firmware repair (initial attempt).

• (Standard) CTRTransfer
• Update to latest firmware version with Recovery Mode or System Settings → Other Settings → System Update.
• (If repair was successful, go to section V.)

IV - Firmware repair (second attempt, in case section III failed).

• Restoring a NAND Backup
• CTRTransfer (Type D9)
• Update to the latest firmware version.

V - Because you're not done yet.

• Finalizing Setup

CTRtransfer did not work. On bootup with no keys held, it starts to Fastboot3DS. If I choose Continue Boot, it says firmware not loaded. If I go in and choose boot.frim, it goes back to ARM9 error. Restoring NAND backups won't be an option, there isn't one. Stock recovery mode with Up+R+L+A goes directly to Fastboot3DS.

Fastboot3ds is an advanced bootloader. First time users should stick to boot9strap until they're comfortable understanding how chainloader works.

When you get the chance, revert the custom firmware setup back to boot9strap using the Updating B9S guide (ie, use SafeB9SInstaller).

So during this D9 operation, I'm stuck looping at a certain point where in the remarks it states "force loop the operation if user attempts to cancel"

Ah, yes. This is a bug in my script that was previously caught helping another 3DS user with a firmware brick. The cause of this is due to a file called the movable.sed. Older systems with original movable.sed don't have CMACs to calculate from, so the script loops thinking this component isn't fix.

I can't release a fixed version of the script until the next version of GodMode9 is available due to too many code changes.

Yah, just turn off the 3DS system. Go back in the script and finish up with Inject HBL to Camera. You'll need this gain access to Homebrew Launcher.

That CFW starter kit does not include the Luma3DS config.bin. This file is generated upon the first time booting the custom firmware / HOME Menu.

Worry about that later. Let's first focus on reverting that 3DS back to boot9strap setup.

While in GodMode9,

• Go to [0:] SDCARD ()/luma/payloads/SafeB9SInstaller.firm → FIRM image options... → Boot FIRM → <A> yes.
• You should see SafeB9SInstaller v0.0.07 at that bottom screen. Punch in the combo to confirm reflashing boot9strap back to the 3DS (ie, replace fastboot3ds).

If successful, B9S will try to load the Luma3DS (boot.firm) from the SD card. You should be greeted with the Luma3DS v9.1 configuration screen. From that CFW starter kit post, use these settings.

Unless the last owner damaged or corrupted several key specific NAND files, your 3DS should boot to HOME Menu. If it does not, you'll be instructed next to hex view those files.

Thanks again. The prompt responses are really appreciated. I've done these, and I'm back to the ARM9 prefetch error that would come up when I first got the system.

I had an early suspicion that your softbrick would be nontypical / difficult.

For the time being, turn off your 3DS and read this thread.

I know this is a lot to take in at once. You'll need to familiarize yourself with later hex viewing the files labeled in those diagrams.

Since you ran the CTRTransfer (Type D9) script, copies of the o3DSXL's NAND files were partially backed up on your SD card.

bold = folder, Courier New = file

1. Download and install the HxD hex editor program (Windows).

• Hex editor options for Mac and Linux users.

2. On the SD card, go to the sdmc:/gm9/out directory. There should be a folder in this format:

• ######_XX#######_sysnand ctrnand_000
• ###### = date stamp
• XX####### = serial number (this should match the one on the back cover plate)

3. Open and examine the following five (5) files:
sdmc:/gm9/out/######_XX#######_sysnand ctrnand_000/

private/

movable.sed​

ro/

sys/

HWCAL0.DAt
HWCAL1.DAt​

rw/

sys/

LocalFriendCodeSeed_B
SecureInfo_A | SecureInfo_B | (There should only be one SecureInfo. Please point out if there are multiple: A, B, C. etc.)​

4. Compare those files against the below reference diagram. Check for the following:

• HWCAL0.DAt / HWCAL1.DAt - On the right column (Decoded text), look for the magic header word CCAL.
• movable.sed - Magic header word SEED.
• LocalFriendCodeSeed_B - Compare this with the movable.sed. An entire copy of the LFCS_B should be found within movable.sed.
  • See the example's yellow box & line in how the [ 35 6C 31 F2 65 ...... 1A DD 02 00 00 00 ] block matches.
• SecureInfo_A (or _B) - This should contain the o3DSXL's serial number, which should match the one found on the back cover plate.
  • If the o3DSXL has USA firmware, the hex offset 0x100 region value should be "01".

Spoiler: Reference Diagram for NAND files

If those NAND files don't resemble anything like in the above diagram, have mismatching data, or everything is entirely filled with random values or all zeros (00), these may have been corrupted or replaced with garbage copies. Additional troubleshooting would need to be continued by PM (private message).

Remember, do not publicly disclose, share, or post images of your NAND files on the forums. Leaked or stolen LocalFriendCodeSeed_B and movable.sed can be used against you in getting you banned from online Nintendo services.
