XI is -really- good. And although dated 3 is very good as well. I want to say 4, 5, and 6 are good as well, but I am afraid I don't remember them much right now.

Now 7 is... good but my god it is a VERY long game. I mean LONG, so I would avoid playing that one.

Of all of them, I think I probably enjoyed XI the most. I 100%'d it, which I basically never do with long RPGs like that.

Before that, it was the Dragon Warrior I&II GBC port. I probably beat both easily over 50 times each since my dad got it for my GBC, usually play through them on my actual cartridge every year even though at this point I find it to be incredibly grindy and boring.

I like 3--the first ten minutes grabbed my nuts as a teen (yeah, I said it....yeah.)
I really felt, "Oh, man! You soothsayer--get out of my head!"

Dated graphics, yes, but I also enjoyed Sentinels, Hand, DQB, and that DQJ translation.

I guess 8 is very accessible and has "that flavor/flavour"; I enjoy it much.
Seven is for the youth--I can't play more than an hour without getting sleepy, but I enjoy it like a bedtime story.

I haven't played Heroes or 11, yet.

I hardly bother to play these games. I have tried some, Dragon Quest 8 on ps2, Dragon Quest 9 on NDS (Because it was a birthday gift) I'm actually a bit more excited for dragon quest 11 despite not playing much of the series. The problems I had with that game is how difficult It was for me to play. Call it pet peeves or tell me I'm wrong or I shouldn't play cause I don't grasp the idea of RPGs, etc. But the pacing in some is way slow, I didn't like how long "Grinding" to be strong was. I also didn't like the name of spells, I always had to read the description just to know what it does cause it doesn't use common or traditional naming methods. These are all the feelings I get when I try classic phantasy star series from the genesis.

I like the music and story and some of what you can do, like raising monsters and such. I would pick DQ 8 despite never finishing it. But by god, please pace games better, not just this series, but other RPG games. I'm sorry, Mario & Luigi spoiled me, leveling up isn't a necessity in those games. It's a way to make your game easier, not mandatory. You can dodge attacks from enemies if you have the reflex for it, making it a choice to level up for a easier time or focus on reflexes to avoid grinding. This is why Action RPG has become popular to some people. Players who focus on reflexes can do that, and players who like taking their time for strategy and tactics can do that. I'm glad there is RPG for everyone. :)

I kinda liked 5, sorta. I hear the best ones are supposed to be 8, 9 and 11?

Well, good on you!

Those are purportedly the best the series can offer, but that's subjective. Probably like comparing FF II to FF VI (J) and saying, "this is the best that can be offered."

Maybe one day, we should play XI....it'll be weird, but I'm working on that.

Ok guys, I'm revealing my age with this answer but for me it's Dragoon Warrior 1 on the NES.

Graphics are horrible. What can I say, it's 8 bit? I just remember how fun it was setting out on this epic quest lol. Also I have fond memories of 2 & 3. It was DW1, FF1, Ultima Exodus and even Legend of Zelda that made me an RPG fan. (my favorite genre) Yes you can argue they are not all true RPGs but they got me hooked.

RPG games just spoke to me. There was something so cool about setting out on a quest to defeat horrible, epic evils and restore peace and good in the world. Especially the idea you normally start out so weak you can barely defeat a green slime but by the end of the game you are a mighty conquering hero (dare I say legendary?) who is loved and adored by all.

What DQ games beyond one through three are available in the US?

DQ IX for the win. That game has a ton of content, great multiplayer combat, and has a ton of free dlc (save edit for it now tho). Also one of the best class systems imo as well
also the dlc is absolutely full of cameos from other dq games. Realms of Revelation was also really solid even though it's a little aged

I mean, initially? Only 5, 6, and 10 weren't released in the US during the same release window as the originals, all the rest were available in the US pretty much the same release window as the JP ones (accounting for the usual year-ish delay for translation, of course).

It's not like the DQ games never showed up in the US after the first few games, they just weren't as popular as FF.

The PAL regions, on the other hand, didn't get shit for the main Dragon Quest series until 8, was only after that released (a couple years after it's JP release, too) that PAL regions was actually considered a viable market for the games for some reason.
