The previous message was a bit misleading. Scires has uploaded the new changelog and bumped the version to 0.9.0, which means the update is ready, however it hasn't seen an official release yet.

(Before you ask, no, you can't compile it yourself. Sept has been changed so, unless you have access to the private tsec keys, you can't.)

If you edit saves and go online with them you'll get banned regardless if you're on emunand or not.

Short Answer: No
Long Answer: You can use it to avoid being banned if you aren't already, so you can keep your sysnand clean and have in your emunand all your homebrew and... other stuff...
Also, in patched units, you don't have a coldboot exploit (the RCM one) in case of a brick, so it's the safest thing to use on those systems (like in the old 3DS days where arm9loaderhax/boot9strap wasn't a thing)
