ah, so you do have some games working fine?

I didn't have that much issue to make games work, but I didn't play a lot of games using emuNAND. I can confirm these games worked : Cave story, La Mulana, Lost winds. and that's the only I completed.

how did you make your emuNAND dump ? dumping your console's NAND with USBLoaderGX (using which loader's IOS?), using a FSDumper, or using a clean NAND from modmii?
Maybe one of that method is the problem.

Bad guide strikes again. This was first time I softmodded a Wii. I used a guide that had me use rev 18 for base 57. Just updated to rev 19 and everything that should have worked, now works. For those games that require neek, I haven't yet tried to see if neek will now work but will test later today.

For anyone who sees this and is getting a black screen on WiiWare, if you followed the Complete Soft Mod Guide, when using NUS Downloader, for IOS 57, make sure you get v5919, NOT v5918 as they say.

Thanks @Cyan for just hanging in there with me as I worked through it. All of your posts throughout the forum have been a huge help.

Thanks for the info about the IOS57 version. though, if you use d2x installer it'll always download latest version from NUS.

why would you use cIOS rev18 or rev19? these are very old.
I'm not sure it's a good idea, unless it's a known working IOS for a specific game.

for example, some VC N64 will require rev19, if you don't want to use neek.
but not all VC N64 will work with rev19.

rev17
rev18
rev19
rev20
rev21
rev21 mod d2x v1
rev21 mod d2x v2
...
rev21 mod d2x v7 (first stable and most compatible version)
rev21 mod d2x v8 final <-- recommended
rev21 mod d2x v9 beta
rev21 mod d2x v10 (same as v8, forced released for vWii)
rev21 mod d2x v10-alt (same as v9 beta, forced released for vWii)

the best in my opinion is to use either d2x v8 final base57, or IOS58 while inside USBLoaderGX to do the NAND dump step.
they might not use the same "FAT32 character conversion" so I'm not sure which one is better. I'd say if you use cIOS emuNAND mode it's best to do the dump with the same cIOS you use to play.
if you plan to use neek, it's best to do it with IOS58, or even a dump with SimpleFSDumper which was specifically written with neek in mind.
if what I'm saying is not clear enough :

some games have filenames with ":" in them, for example one of the Harry potter savegame. when you dump your NAND to FAT32, that character is forbidden and must be changed. the replaced character might not be the same whether you use d2x and USBLoaderGX, or another NAND dumper.
if you use d2x and it converts the incompatible characters using one method (&htmlcode; for example), and then you use neek which expect them another way (customcode for example), the games will not work, or the savegame will not be found, etc.

I could just be using wrong language here. What I meant was, when I originally soft modded, I used NUS Downloader and obtained IOS 57 --> v5918 originally. When I went in and got v5919, that is what worked. When I install through d2xloader, I did select d2xv10 beta52.

For emuNAND, I created it through USBLoaderGX. This works well for me for most things, but struggling to get neek to load with that NAND. I will take a look into SimpleFSDumper because there are a few N64 titles I have that would require neek.

A big problem for idiots like me is that information is scattered everywhere, and some things are outdated.

I know boy & a blob works, but last time I played it I used IOS56
try to set IOS250 in the game setting.
if it works, let me know, so I know some games don't like base57.

if still doesn't work, try forcing language english (some games don't have other languages, just in case your default language is not english in the console), or video mode force NTSC, etc.

if still doesn't work, verify the ISO is good (sha1 option in wii backup manager)

@Cyan i tried changing the language. To narrow my problem, the game loads fine until you finish one stage and the game needs to load again (before the loading screen) the game freeze. Another game is murumasa. I can finish one stage but when it needs to load again, the game freeze.

freeze at loading sequence always feels like HDD sleep problem.
if you spend a lot of time on an area/zone where the game doesn't need to access the disc/data on usb, then the usb firmware stops the spinning engine.
did you notice any noise differences on your HDD ? does it stop spinning?

I think it stop because the red light on the hdd external turns off. Sometimes it stays on red light instead of blinking red.

check on your hdd manufacturer's website if they have tool to edit or disable the sleep timer.
if not, you might have to try another HDD's brand, at least to see if it's still freezing or not.
if it still freeze, maybe it's another problem.

I fixed this problem too.

First i change my usb enclosure from 3.0 to usb 2.0 and used the y cable
2nd: i used my syscheck.csv on modmii to update/fix the cIOS

Now i can play a boy and his blob and murumasa without freeze. I think cIOS 249/57 d2x v8 final and 250/56 d2x v8 final works better than the v10 beta52.

Since you installed d2x v8, your console must be a Wii and Wii doesn't normally need a Y-cable unless your HDD is ultra hungry for power. WiiU is another story tho.

All i did was trial and error. I am happy that my problem is now solved.

there's no difficulty, nor any need to call or make things private.

using usbloader is a matter of 3 steps :
1- install HBC on an updated console. (modmii might be fine for that)
once you have HBC :
2- install (or overwrite) your cIOS slot249 with : d2x v8 final, base 57
3- download and extract usbloadergx to your SD card.
done

now use a FAT32 USB HDD (NOT A FLASHDRIVE ! NOT USB KEY!) and wii backup manager to put games on it if you have them on your computer, or insert the disc and choose "install" to copy the disc to usb.

preferred setup inside usbloadergx :
settings > update > gametdb. it'll download all game's official title information.
main menu, press 1 or 2 to open the "cover download" menu, and get a nice looking interface.

if your HDD is stuck on "initialization" screen, go to settings > loader's settings > loader's IOS : change the value to 58 and reboot.

Gentlemen, I'm facing similar issue of Black Screens and Console's halt. I guess I've already read all the 15 pages of this post and I've tried all the suggestions, but still having problems. I have my original help request post here: help-cant-load-any-game-from-usb-hard-drive-cfg-loader-halts-on-ios-248-ios-reload-blocked.539923/#post-8660903. Unfortunately as a new member I can't attach the link for the post, so I'll copy it down here to give you guys (in special to @Cyan ) one idea of my situation:

"...
Recently I've updated my Wii using ModMii; I've followed all the steps flawless but since I did it I'm not able to load any game from my USB hard drive.

The problem comes with USB loader GX: whenever I try to boot a game from my USB drive it seems to boot normally but halts the Wii just after. The only way to get out of this black screen is by pressing Power button for some seconds.

As I have the CFG loader from the ModMii installation. I've tried it to, but using CFG I still have the Wii halted during the loading procedure at this point:

IOS(248).......
IOS Reload: Blocked
Loading ................

As in the other loader, the only way to get out of this black screen is by pressing Power button for some seconds.

Originally I had d2x-v6 for IOS247[57] and IOS248[56] and d2x-v8final for IOS249[56] and IOS250[57]. In another forum a guy solved his problem by updating those IOS for the latest v10 so I've tried it too, but without success

I'm using a 250GB external USB Hard Drive from Western Digital... It's formated as FAT32 in just one partition. The games were transferd to the HD using the WiiBackupManager_Build78 tool.
..."

I've installed d2x-v10 beta 52 on slot 251 base58 as I've read in previous posts. Additionally I've tried to configure USB Loader GX to load from slots 249, 250 and 251... All failed as before...

I'm really in trouble as I've just bought the Wii for my kids as they were "claiming" for it, and now all the games I've managed to get to them are not working anymore...

Please, if someone could HELP I'll be VERY THANKFUL !!!
