It says this guide was posted back in 2016, is this guide still accurate? I was hoping to find a recommended video guide for hacking Vwii so I can see exactly what you need to do, something up to date, and I've been able to find one since I just have so little idea what's going on with a lot of this stuff. And do you still need to connect to the internet, because I think that would be a problem for me.

I actually was wondering the same thing, as from what I hear Plialect's guides tend to be out of date as well, but as far as I know the stuff you want from vWii can be done through the WiiU side via VC injection without really touching it at all so vWii hack seems more of a novelty to me

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

@modernvisionpt if you're trying to remove a parental control PIN from the WiiU there's always SALT which generates the master key for Parental Controls. Just Google "mkey salthax"

Don't you need to softmod your vWii to play Retroarch and downloadable Wii titles (like Castlevania Rondo of Blood and the Konami "Rebirth" games) though?

If you have the game already dumped you should be able to use TeconMoon's WiiVC Injector, you would just install it via WUP Installer GX and play it like any other WiiU dump(I did this with my dump of The Last Story) and Retroarch on WiiU is a thing btw

I tried this guide only 2 months ago. I installed homebrew channel and did things with wads and the wad manager. I also tried out project m and newer super Mario wii and they both worked fine from my experience. By online do you mean your computer or your console because your computer probably needs to stay online for the entire download from computer process. Don't take my word 100% though I'm new at this.

I’m planning on buying a used Wii U to hack.

Is there any real advantage to getting a black one if it’s hacked? Does the extra internal storage offer any advantages?

except the internal storage capacity, there's no difference.
more capacity might be easier to install big games (SD->internal), if you don't use an external WiiU HDD.

It says this guide was posted back in 2016, is this guide still accurate?
it's semi accurate.
it says "you need 5.5.2", but it also work on 5.5.3 the exact same way.
5.5.3 wasn't released at the time the guide has been written. but 5.5.3 didn't add any fix at all, it was only a RGPD law update for europe. 5.5.3 exploits the same exact vulnerability than 5.5.2

The only change you might benefit from an updated guide is that there's a new "browser hack" method for 5.5.2 and 5.5.3 which is not listed in this guide.
the current one listed in the guide is 80% reliable. (20% the console freezes and you need to reboot and try again)
the new one (not in the guide) is 100% reliable.

in both cases (with old and new browser exploit), the guide works exactly the same way, the steps are identical. The only changes you can do is use the updated exploit by going to this guide and follow the "browser hax" method, which covers the updated version of the exploit.

note that all this "5.5.2 or 5.5.3" requirement is ONLY if you don't use a Wii game disc, but instead want to use a hacked WiiU mode to hack your vWii mode. this is NOT mandatory nor the only method to hack vWii.
if your WiiU is already hacked, most steps are not even required, you just need a way to launch a wiiU homebrew ! if you already know how to do that, you did half the steps already :)

there are absolutely no advantage in a premium edition (black) over the white one, because 8Gb vs 32Gb, both are ridiculous space on the WiiU era.
You will need a external HDD for extra storage in both cases.

I'm pretty sure you should just stop touching things for now and read the instructions through a few times. Playing Wii U games is different from playing Wii & GameCube through vWii.

I think you're in the wrong thread for what you're tying to do. If you want to play Wii U games you should be following this guide: https://gbatemp.net/threads/guide-community-noob-guide-to-wii-u-hacking.451297/

For playing Wii U games you're going to want to have the Wii U format that drive, copy your files elsewhere. Once formatted your regular computer will NOT be able to read that drive, only the Wii U can read it. Now copy the Wii U games you want to play to the SD card and then have the Wii U install them to the external HDD.

A separate external HDD can be used for playing Wii & GameCube's on the Wii U by using vWii, in which case you'll want to follow this guide starting on page 1.

First of all if you need to post long strings of text (i.e logs, crash dumps, or even a recipe) https://pastebin.com/ exists so that way there won't be unneeded clutter and makes it easier for some to read.
And second of all, I'm not sure what the problem is, could you clarify?

plug the drive in back-top USB Port (USB Port 0)
don't use flash drive, only HDD with y-cable (or external power source).

that's the 2 most common problem to freezes and restarts.

5.5.3 -> 5.5.4 didn't touch the vWii mode, so there's no relation to your problem.

3 important things:

1. use HDD, not flashdrive
2. use either Y-cable or external power source for your HDD, because the WiiU has not enough power over a single usb port for your HDD.
3. be sure you plug the HDD's data cable on USB Port 0 (back-top)

rarely, it can also be because you didn't use WiiBackupManager properly and copied the game in the wrong place, wrong folder name, wrong filename.
be sure you use it properly.

optional:
for better game compatibility, go to usbloadergx > settings > loader settings > game' IOS : replace 249 with 250
replace loader's IOS with 250, and if it doesn't detect the drive at loader's boot, then use 58 for that setting instead of 250.
