Hey yall,

As the documentation on r4's website is SUB PAR I reach out for some help here. Bought a r4i-b9s card. I want to use it as a flashcart for my DSi. This should be possible right? I believe their website says it is, but very confused now.

Have I understood it correctly that it comes delivered as a 3DS flashcart?
Do I need to flash the flashcart (funny?) to change it over to a NDS flashcart?
Can this only be done on a 3DS?

End of first batch of questions...

Cheers,

its listed as a ds flashcart which can be used to play ds games on the 3ds yes. But not 3ds roms themselves. But yes, you are able to plug that cart into a dsi aswell and make use of it.

Thank you! So I believe thats a "yes" to my main question. I like where this is going. Now I just need to figure out how to get there.

Thanks, I am aware of that. I have followed their guide document in the zip folder but still can't get it to work.

Files are in the correct folder structure on the microSD card. Boot DSi with start button pressed. Nothing... Boots into sysmenu.
Even though the guide doesn't mention you might have to do this on a 3DS I also tried the same procedure on the 3DS. Same result.

All of a sudden I feel like a complete noob :) I have been modding consoles for about 20 years now. Region unlocked my NES when I was 13. Soldering modchips, Flashing 360 drives, kmeaw through teensy, installing A9LH, etc. For once I bought a readymade product and now fumbling in the dark.

If someone who has completed this procedure could lay out the steps I would be forever grateful.

Which files go where, and what procedure is executed on what hardware.

Cheers,

Those files on the 3DS system's SD card.

luma/

payloads/
r4i-sdhc.firm
ntrboot/
r4i-sdhc.bin
Directions
  1. Turn on the 3DS, hold (START) to access Luma3DS v9.1 configuration chainloader, and select r4i-sdhc.
  2. Restore Red Flash.
You should see the Touch! Bomberman Land icon?? for that flashcart in HOME Menu. This means its DS mode flashrom has been restored.
Don't forget it needs the kernel on the micro SD card.

If everything else checks out but the cart still doesn't work, it's probably the time bomb. This requires YSMenu kernel.

Thank you! Very condensed and straightforward. Appreciated!

So apparently I had done it correctly. Must be a time bomb then. It’s not because I have a9hl installed that it doesn’t boot the Luma right? Seriously, don’t have time to fuck around with this kind of bullshit. Thought the R4 cards were popular. Never expected to receive a dud straight out the box.

Still think the instructions on their website are S H I T. What about the users who don’t have a 3DS and just want to use it as a DSi/NDS flashcart???

4 Things:
1: They do not buy the card since it's main purpose is installing b9s(and then reflashing NDS Mode firmware once the console is modded)

2: Ask a friend with modded system to do it for you

3: Buy the R4i Gold 3DS Plus(Has internal NtrBoot/DS mode switch)

4: Use ntrboot flasher.nds if you have any other ways of running .nds files in the console

The model you bought is basically a relabeled R4i-SDHC 3DS RTS (made by www.r4i-sdhc.com, not to be confused for other companies) that was preflashed with ntrboot mode. If your 3DS is already hacked with A9LH cfw, you should have upgraded to boot9strap.
FIRM payloads don't work with the older arm9loaderhax.

Other than that, you can try debugging other causes that interferes with DS mode. Take a read in this thread for when you have the time, energy, and levelheadedness patience.

Thanks! Great resources. Will have a read.

They have the R4i 3DS RTS for users that want to play DS games. It's cheaper and has exactly the same hardware.

Fair points I guess. But they should at least add a “friend with 3DS required” note next to NDS support. This flashcart market is a complete jungle. Bring a machete!

If your dsi has homebrew access or you have another flashcard and a original nds. The DS mode firmware can be flashed using said consoles

Interesting, sounds like a solution. Unfortunately no homebrew access on the DSi. Do have two DS lite and two different flashcards. (DSTT & R4 Revolution)

Here is the back story.

Found a DSi and decided to give it to my son as an entry-level console, hoping he would forget all those youtube videos teaching different colors in Spanish. The initial plan was to install HiyaCFW but as the console doesn't have Flipnote installed that route is closed. I read that you can NAND inject Flipnote via hardmod, but "real-life" commitments have left me very little time for tedious technical escapades. Tried my older flashcards on the DSi but none of them worked. Read that some cards are blocked on the DSi so decided to buy a new one which was supposed to work with DSi...
In hindsight, maybe the NAND injection would have taken less time and effort.

So yeah, I do have the hardware, time is what I lack.

Wow, isn’t that just about the right timing. Thanks.

This was the previous post I was referring to. Sounded like you had a method using a DS and another flashcart. Might scrap r4i now however.

Cheers

i think i heard of that, it's a good idea, shouldn't need a dedicated GPU just to run a LLM or video upscaling

even the nvidia shield tv has AI video upscaling

@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.

i don't think nvidia wants to get in the x64 cpu market anyways

@Psionic Roshambo AI assisted game creation is kinda already here, there was recently that AI that can turn any 2D image into a fully modeled 3D object, it's not perfect, but it's a starting point, beats starting from zero

before that there was one to generate a fully modeled scene from a 2D image
