Microsoft and Sony will be partnering up in order to advance cloud-based services

Not since the first appearance of a Sonic game on a Nintendo console have we seen such a shocking partnership, as Microsoft and Sony have announced that they'll be working together in order to make advancements in cloud gaming. The two rivals will put aside their differences, at least when it comes specifically to Microsoft Azure and cloud-powered services. As referred to in the press release, Sony will be assisting the development of Microsoft's cloud technology in exchange for being able to apply it, likely to their PlayStation Now and PlayStation Vue services.

Under the memorandum of understanding signed by the parties, the two companies will explore joint development of future cloud solutions in Microsoft Azure to support their respective game and content-streaming services. In addition, the two companies will explore the use of current Microsoft Azure datacenter-based solutions for Sony’s game and content-streaming services. By working together, the companies aim to deliver more enhanced entertainment experiences for their worldwide customers. These efforts will also include building better development platforms for the content creator community.

This partnership is especially curious, as it comes somewhat after the reveal of the all-streaming Google Stadia, and in the midst of both companies gearing up for the switch into the next gaming generation.

Sony has always been a leader in both entertainment and technology, and the collaboration we announced today builds on this history of innovation,” said Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft. “Our partnership brings the power of Azure and Azure AI to Sony to deliver new gaming and entertainment experiences for customers.

This is shitty for game collectors. If your hardware dies, you lose your games if and when the console is considered "dead and unsupported" by their respective companies.
Isnt it already happening with a lot of switch games being sold digitaly only? Or the physical ones that have half the game in the cartridge and you have to download the rest of it?

Sorry guys the days of collecting are done everything will become digital which is scary look at 4k movies you can get them for digital much cheaper than disc even Blu Ray's I paid 12.99 for arrows version of deep red on Google play and the disc cost over 25 dollars on Amazon if video games follow that strategy people will buy digital because it will be cheaper

Yeah, it's really annoying.

Makes sense, Microsoft is a major player in Cloud tech.

You want your minds blown further, chances are many Sony studios use Microsoft products (Office, Windows, Visual Studio, etc.). And I bet somebody at Microsoft used a Sony branded product. Truly, this means Halo on PS5 and Uncharted on Xbox.

Definitely smart for Microsoft. They're really ramping things up. Even if their hardware doesn't sell as well as the competition, they still have power over cloud services, now. And they're snapping up smaller studios and their IPs. Not to mention that they can market to two different platforms: Xbox and PC. Things are looking good for them.

With Xbox being essentially a stripped down PC at this point, which isn't to diss the impressive specs of an Xbox One X in anyway, but when you already have a beast of a system like yours truly, it makes getting an Xbox kind of pointless especially when a lot of their games are coming to Steam of all places! And they said Microsoft was going to turn Windows into a MS Monopoly (not that they couldn't in the future, tbf).

Still, talk about Top 10 Worst Anime Crossovers, as it's using a feature I can't ever see myself using, as dropped inputs and frames as a fighting game buff (not pro, that's for sure) drive me crazy like you wouldn't believe, as if I fuck up, I want it to be my fault as a player, and if I make progress, I want it to be my effort!

It would kill the point of getting a console for each of the respective companies to allow players to play Halo on PS5 or Yakuza/God of War on Xbox. At that point, it'd become a question of what controller do you like better or which system has the better specs if they aren't aiming for parity for all practical intents and purposes like the launch versions of the PS4/XB1?

Some only do that for the international release. Final Fantasy X+X2 for example uses a larger cartridge with both games on cart for the Japanese and Asia release which include an english option.
Megaman X Anniversary Collection 2 got a physical release in Japan, but only if you buy separately, not the bundle.

Wait where did it say that they're abandoning physical games? If the rumors are true that ps5 will be backwards compatible then surely it means the ps5 will have a bluray disc to play ps4 games and most likely ps5 games would also be on discs.

Bet microsoft will still want to recycle its failed groove.exe from the 90s which they made into onedrive and is why it sucks arse.

They should give customers the option to use their own cloud account to sync game saves etc

Lots of Sony haters, oh wait, is that par for the course on gbatemp? It will help with online, all these idiotic conspiracies about losing “more” access to your games is dumb.
got nothing to do with hating sony game streaming just plain and always will SUCK. cloud gaming IS NOT the future. i prefer to actually own my games the same goes with movies.

Ah, the one thing both Microsoft and Sony agree on: giving customers less ownership over their games.
Exactly my first thought.
Sounds like some certain companys are actually scared by Stadia haha :ha:
Except that it will all be compatible with Stadia, they just don't want to make it obvious right now. In the future that the powers that be want no one owns anything (except them of course). And this does not end with digital media it extends to property ownership. If you think this is conspiracy think again. Individuals cannot privately own land in China but may obtain transferrable land-use rights for a number of years for a fee. Currently, the maximum term for urban land-use rights granted for residential purposes is seventy years. ... Both urban land-use rights and home ownership are subject to registration.Mar 1, 2015. This means you cannot own land and thus you cannot leave it to your children. Wake up Neo.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
