New Minecraft update removes references to creator "Notch"

800px-MainMenu.png

A curious new snapshot build for Minecraft has added some bugfixes and some minor gameplay changes, but there's something a bit more noticeable in the patch notes. Most players of Minecraft will be familiar with the randomized phrases that appear on the game's splash screen, with some of them being references to Markus Alexj Persson, otherwise more well-known by his nickname "Notch". The update has specifically removed those references to Minecraft's creator, such as "Made by Notch!", "The work of Notch!", and "110813". Microsoft didn't give a reason for the removal, though it could potentially be due to Notch's divisive Twitter comments causing a rift, and possibly resulting in the company trying to distance themselves from his politics. The only remaining mention of Notch is in the game's full end credits.

i heard Minecraft is a unique, people tend either like it or hate it, I personally have never played it. i had to google him too and this guy just shared some different thoughts about him on LGT and got attacked and insulted from people over the internet.

it's easy for commoners to stay behind a monitor and use keyboard as weapon, especially when their target is a famous guy. he doesn't agree about transgender's sexuality, but that's simply doesn't make him a ''piece of manure''.

He compares GID to schizophrenia, it's not just a 'different thought', it's a pretty dangerous one.

he hasn't professional qualification to determine the GID from schizophrenia, i think that opinion came from his ignorance instead a real evil homophobic person.

p.s. i know how transgenderphobis/homophobic people insult LGT, since i live in Italy which is VERY catholic country and LGT are not well accepted here, I'm sure he wasn't intentionally to attack those sensible people neither start on his own will such dangerous arguments. Btw what is GID?

Please refrain from referring to GD as GID. It's been reclassified as Gender Dysphoria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders for a reason.

Minecraft, much less the creator thereof, held very little interest for me so I am only peripherally aware of him. Still seeing this I thought I would go looking and did not get much.

Is this people getting panties in a bunch about nothing? Other news stories about this event (the handful of which I clicked on said not a lot) and something about poor phone design I saw a few things from 2017 or so, (one saying "It's OK to be white" which seems like a fairly benign statement, another he apparently walked back about heterosexual pride day after it was apparently explained gay pride day is less about pride in and of itself but that it can be shown which is fair enough, and some seemed to be upset he stumped up a bit for the Count Dankula appeal).

Notch is a part of the game like Herobrine is a part of the game. It's got nothing to do with Markus Persson, it's just one of those memes from old-school Minecraft players like myself who were around before Microsoft's takeover.

rip spaghetti code man, may flights of quake 3 battles sing thee to thy rest

good, but again, it's not like he cares for it anymore, he already sold it for $2.5 billion.
weird they didn't remove his reference before.

To anyone not fully getting it or who might be thinking that whatever claims Notch is making are being exagerrated, this is the guy that did the following things:
  • Say QAnon is right (the conspiracy idiot).
  • Can't say that the Nazis were bad people (instead he went on a tangent about how modern day Nazis don't exist).
  • On international womens day managed to tweet that "women should belong in the kitchen" and an entire tweet chain that is blatantly transphobic as well as believing it's celebrating body dysphoria and that "trans people are using the wrong pronouns" (as in -> you should misgender them).
To put it lightly: The man is an MGTOWer (Men Going Their Own Way (although personally I'd expand it to Men Going Their Own Way Yet Being Strangely Concerned As To What Women Think)), a transphobe and has issues condeming the fucking Nazis.

You can find all of these on his twitter, I can cite tweet chains if staff here are okay with it.

The reason this is relevant is because his name is still extremely prominently connected to Minecraft, to the point where a couple of the startup messages specifically thanked Notch. Now let's say you're Mojang (from what I found this was a move by the devs, not a move by Microsoft) and you're starting to get flak because your ex-boss (who only made the initial version of your game but takes all the credit even though you've been doing much more work on it in the past several years and has already taken the lions share of the sale to Microsoft so there is already some resentment to him) is expressing views that at best are ignorant and at worst are supporting Nazism (note: I don't think Notch is a nazi, he's probably just incredibly stupid).

At that point, at least taking of the "Thank you for the game" message that is in the title screen is a start.

And it's nothing like Konami taking off Kojimas name of MGSV, in no small part because Notch is still credited, just no longer on the title screen.

tldr; fuck notch, good move.

I find that very interesting indeed.
I raise you four interestings and a riveting. You'll have to go all-in to call.
This person I personally disagree with is a piece of shit
disagreements about certain things can really illuminate the shittiness of a person
disagreeing with a person about whether or not their personal feelings regarding their gender is anything to do with you is probably a good indicator
from what I have seen, he's definitely a nut
the guy decided to make a game where everything is a cube with low-res textures, and at night, zombies, skeletons, spiders, and explosive green vomit creatures try to kill you
no kidding he's nucking futs
seems like he lives in your head rent-free, tbh
ooh zing you got noir there, dude
speaking about the dude being discussed? i guess you have a problem B-)

Naw, more like he's the hobo at the outside of my apartment who occasionally shows up and then needs the cops called on him because he's shitting in the dogshed.

(Non-stupid metaphor; I usually get this stuff in my face second hand because someone else linked it and I then do my own investigation because I'm curious.)

Huh, seems almost like an oversight that they were still there since they had already removed several other Notch related ones years ago. As long as they don't remove his name from the credits, I don't much care.

You know, he does seem nuts. But as a gay man, I will say that some of this stuff us a bit much. My husbands sister is MtF and that I can understand. But LGBT has become LGBTQIA+? I'm not even sure what they all are anymore. I went from getting death threats for my own sexuality to being considered a bigot because I called someone displaying feminine characteristics a "she" when they actually identify as a feminine male with gender neutral pronouns. Sometimes I feel like it's just hard to be politically correct enough.

That being said, from having read his tweets, he does seem to have a lot more going on. I honestly thing that too much is going into this "transphobia" and not enough of the rest of his batshit insanity is being discussed.

Eh, it seems like a dick move, but hey, at least the guy has money to burn. Everyone knows who made Minecraft, even if MS takes his name off of it.

not really, dude. it's your friend who wrote the extensive treatise on the guy, complete with citations. seems like he's been compiling it for much longer than I've been in this thread.

I just read some of his "controversal" tweets and have come to this conclusion. Notch's opinions (from what I read) are not really extremely homophobic or racist. "It's okay to be white" and "Heterosexual celebration" are both valid opinions and aren't controversal in their own right. The issue lies in the aggressive nature behind the tweets, especially the latter one. Saying "I think people who are against heterosexual pride deserve to be shot" is aggressive and wrong. He didn't attack any specific group. He attacked those with differing opinions and that is his mistake.

In the long haul, I think the whole thing is unnecessary. It's unnecessary to remove the splash text and it's unnecessary to make a big deal out of it.
