Hi all,

This post will sound a lot like another one here today, but there's a major difference which is why I started a new one.

My wife surprised me with a Nintendo Switch under the Christmas tree, and I'm hoping to use a custom firmware or whatever's needed to hack it and make backups playable.

I've hacked original Xbox, Xbox 360 & PSP in the past. So while I'm not a CFW noob, I've never owned or hacked a switch so total noob for this.

The big issue is the Serial number:

XAW1009xxxxxxx

Is there any hope or is this completely unhackable?

I'm not looking for the cheapest hack but rather the easiest/most convenient hack. If that means paying for a service or buying hardware, that's totally fine. I don't plan on any online gaming. Offline only.

Should I even open & boot the thing up or wait? I don't want some update installed that makes things difficult, that's why I'm asking.

Thanks for any advice & suggestions.

TL;DR. Compare your serial here to know if your Switch is patched or not:

Serials beginning with XAW1:
XAW1007800X and below are safe to buy
XAW1007900X and above not safe to buy, possibly patched
XAW1012000X and above definitely patched

If it is patched don't update to 6.2.0 as you will at least be able to run homebrew soon.

Very likely patched. Keep it on firmware 4.1.0 (or whatever it came with), on 4.1.0 and below you'll will eventually be able to run CFW even on patched systems

The guys al Walmart let me look at all the serials. Just got another one for online only. No hacking but I was surprised that they let me check the serials. Turns out all the ones I checked were hackable. So theres a load here in Layton Utah if anyone wants to travel ;)

(Now I gotta wait until Nintendo support is open tomorrow to have them transfer my NNID from my banned one)

Well I'll at least try and help out here even though it looks like you have a patched Switch. You absolutely want SX Pro in your case for simplicity. You'll have to pay around $50 but it's been well worth it imo. Someone said it pretty well the other day, made me chuckle:

If you don't have a life: Atmosphere/Reinx
If you have a life: SX Pro

Made me chuckle, quite accurate though imo. :P

Edit: Sorry, the $50 price tag was in regards to SX Pro (which is totally worth it for the dongle imo), the OS itself you can get for around half that but you need a computer or phone to launch its payload.

Your joking right? And there's no cfw that works on patched systems as of right now...

50$ is if you want to buy the SX Pro, you can easily just get the SX OS license and get a jig, much cheaper.

No, I wasn't joking. I wasn't suggesting he does it on a patched Switch (I acknowledged that at the very beginning). I was simply providing him information on custom firmware in general, should he ever get his hands on a hackable Switch.

I only found out about switch hacking when I already updated my patched switch to 6.2.0. Is it bad?

Very bad. Firmware 6.2 has killed all, if not most, of Deja Vu which is the only other exploit that is public. You're better off returning that one or buying a second unpatched console, preferably used.

Noooo :(
But I don't understand, with the unpatched consoles an I play the most recent games? From what I understood, each game has its own firmware.
And there's really no way to downgrade?

Unpatched consoles can update to the latest firmware without burning fuses because we have code execution on coldboot so we can bypass the fuse check. Patched consoles don't have anything aside from some potential userland homebrew on firmwares 4.1 and below.

I think I'm gonna need a drink after reading this.
I wanna dig a hole for myself

Try and return it as mentioned but if you can't, sell it and re-buy a brand new hackable one on Ebay from a trusted seller. Expect to spend $350-$400 for a guaranteed, brand new hackable Switch though. Maybe more if its international shipping. Or just raid a store and ask them if you can inspect the serial numbers. /shrug

Ok, so a ton of information rolling in here. The bottom-line, as I understand, is that my Switch is one of the "Patched" ones and therefore at this time, as of today, there is absolutely NOTHING that I can do! If this is not correct - please correct me. If I understand correctly, there is no paid or unpaid solution, including the $50 SX Pro suggested above, which would help, right?

Someone above stated "Keep it on firmware …" … So does that mean don't allow any updates to the device or specifically any firmware updates? The reason I'm asking is, if there's no CFW solution, I still plan to use the device and buy some games, etc. So is there any tips/suggestions for me on what to do/what not to do - to preserve the current state/version, in case a Hack/Method becomes available in the near future?

Thanks!!

All CFW use the same exploit whether its Atmosphere, ReiNX, SX OS, RajNX, etc. They rely on Fusee Gelee which is a hardware exploit. Doesn't matter what CFW you use if your hardware is not vulnerable to the exploit to load CFW.

As for what is the best course of action for a patched unit, there is a warmboot exploit on the Horizon named Deja Vu that works on firmwares 4.1 and below. But newer games and accessing the eShop is going to require higher firmwares, firmwares that aren't compatible with Deja Vu. You're honestly better off buying a second, used console if you want to use it for CFW.
