It turns out, if you extract the game's NSP the files are nearly identical to those on the PC release.
This means you can use Layeredfs to get some of the PC mods working on switch, however this only works with XNB mods. This will not work with mods that use SMAPI or any other program that patches the game.

How to use:
Just place the files of your mod into atmosphere\titles\0100E65002BB8000\romfs\Content just as you would copy them into the content folder on the PC release.

And voila the new assets are loaded from the mod:

I have only tested custom portraits, but other mods should work as well. Use at your own risk, and make sure to back up your save data.

May i know how to do this exactly? would this work on SXOS installed Stardew Valley?

Is this just as simple as creating the atmosphere folder in the root of the sd card with other folders inside it to create the directory and putting the POrtaits xnbs inside the portrait folder inside Content...?

Edit: I just figured it out. thanks

I successfully integrated portraits and characters mod to the game via the first post's instruction.

However i am a bit confused with an expanded language mod that i am trying to use. I downloaded xnb dialogue files but i do not know if i should just use them as is. My confusion is with the xnb filename. They are simple as Abigail.xnb for abigail's expanded dialogue inside Dialogue folder (portrait mods have the same filename but are inside portraits folder).

Looking at the game's pc version, the file structure i saw that there are several language xnb files inside depending on the language i.e. Abigail_English.xnb Abigail_Russian.xnb etc. Should i follow the same filename structure ir Abigail.xnb is enough for the mod to take iver the default game files?

I do not know how to extract the switch game's nsp to look at the language structure if they are the same.

I looked around in the NSP, and it looks like the file name for English would just be the character name (i.e. Abigail.xnb), for other languages it follows the following structure:

Abigail.de-DE.xnb - German
Abigail.es-ES.xnb - Spanish
Abigail.ja-JP.xnb - Japanese
Abigail.pt-BR.xnb - Portuguese
Abigail.ru-RU.xnb - Russian
Abigail.zh-CN.xnb - Chinese

Let me know if this helps, if I made any mistakes feel free to correct.

Thanks, pal. That confirms the dialogue mod might work with layeredfs as well. I appreciate the help. Thanks again

So, I got everything setup and my Switch with CFW. I don't suppose theirs a way to use SMAPI is their? All I really want with that is to run a little faster. Dadgum, that boy slow. I'm 34 and overweight and pretty sure I can run faster than that, lol.

Has anyone else gotten mods to work after the update on the 12? It updates the game to version 1.3 and I can't get any mods to work.

Make sure the filenames are exactly the same. Some files in mods start with lower case, I had to capitalise the first letter of each file before transferring it to my switch (changes on the sd card didn't actually change the capitalisation, so do it before).

And just to be sure, you are using xnb mods and not the newest version of mods right? Because many are usually smapi or content patcher mods, which will not work on the switch.

Be careful which mods you do install though, I'm having trouble with random hard crashes and I'm trying to figure out which mod is causing it.
