I've heard you need to install a nsp file, but how does that work? What's the best homebrew to install it? Also, will I get banned doing so?

Just obtain the nsp and install with the tinfoil homebrew. As for bans, yes

You can install games like we used to do in the 3ds. Although it seems you get banned more easily

SX is only needed for xci backups. You can install nsp backups in other free cfw like ReiNX or atmosphere using tinfoil
Also you can convert xci backups to nsp to install them
