Some people should just learn from their mistakes. I don't condon or anything of that nature of what they did. But I'm smart enough to have a safetynet most of the time before doing stupid things with my gear. It's cheaper that way.

Well if @Creatable made the "virus", maybe he knows how to undo it?
I do, but the only way to undo it is with a NAND backup. I wish I could undo every brick (someone showed me something that kinda made me feel sorry about this yesterday when it happened) but I can't. Unless you have a nand backup, you're done for. I'm sorry.

Uh no, this is victim blaming. Now I'm not that stupid to run any nsp, but plenty of people are. And if I were those people I'd be lawyering up and going for a class action lawsuit to get $300 and more due to moral distress (lol) from this idiot.
please do, they will laugh at you for getting burned for piracy~

It's an easy fix, takes just a minute. All you have to do is restore your Prodinfo partition from the nand backup. You can either use Hekate or hacdiscmount to do so.

This is a pretty common misconception dude. You only need to restore the ProdInfo partition, it's easy to extract this one partition from a rawnand backup using hacdiscmount and then either restore it to the switch using the same tool, or using Hekate. You don't need to restore/change any other data.

From what creatable himself said: it affects the user partition which would have to be restored thus reverting your saves to what they were when you made the backup(kiss all of your progress goodbye if you haven't backed up in weeks or months)

@Creatable what exactly does it destroy?
Part of PRODINFO, console unique, etc...

No, I said I could've done that and it could've been easily recovered without a nand backup.

People are acting like they are shocked that someone made something that could harm their Switch.
This reminds me of the "cracked SX Payload" or some malicious PS Vita apps...this is nothing new!

Here is the thing though:
Every major guide, no matter which console, tells you that you should so a full, clean Backup of your Nand / eMMc / whatever its called on the console of your choice.
This is Console Hacking Basics 101. I don't even know a single guide that does not state that you should do a full Backup.

Does it suck that people from within the scene try to mess with other peoples property? Yes it does! But at the same time: Tough Luck guys, its YOUR fault that you skipped a crucial part to make your Switch safe. Don't only blame the creator of the malicious software.

Like others have already mentioned: When you hack your stuff to run backups or homebrew you should be very well aware that this involves the risk of bricking. Even with "legit" files. There is always the possibility of something going wrong.

Ah crap... and I guess it's not stored anywhere else on the console? @Creatable

I know, seriously dumb question. But wouldn't it be possible just to create a "fake" PRODINFO and have a CFW still confirm it was working? I have no clues as the underside hench why I say seriously dumb.

LOL "CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT" maybe if the program was disguised as a normal homebrew app, but in this case it was disguised as a game users were pirating.

This is the classic I robbed my weedman story where the weedman cant report you because he was doing sketchy stuff to begin with. Granted, I have heard of cases where the courts still charged and tried the person who robbed the weedman and did not charge the weedman with distribution of illegal drugs

This still however could hold up in some countries cyber defense

if it affected stock switch consoles you would maybe have a case there~

yep its dickish as hell, still doesn't change the fact that this wouldn't happen if people followed directions :)

Homebrew is not illegal, uploading fake version of what is intended to be a leaked illegal game is still illegal. no matter the point of the intention of the user affected by it.
Harmful intent will hold up

Yeah, I have seen that happen as well. So, I guess there is a possibility. We'll see what happens, I dont plan to do anything except continue hacking my new switch, chalk it up as part of the game. But lets be clear, its dangerous fucking around on the internet and it could easily turn into real life quickly. There are others who may not be as forgiving as I am who could choose to "take matters into their own hands" or even snitch to the police.
This type of behaviour should not and can not be defended.

homebrew isnt illegal but piracy is and that would make your whole case moot especially when it doesnt affect stock consoles, would love to see you attempt this tho~

Following directions is ACTUALLY what got people into this boat, the creator gave directions to install this crap software and thus killed peoples consoles lol flawed logic as always.

In a sense "Take matters into their own hands" applies to the creator as well.

It could have easily been planned out as a lesson for everybody involved. but instead it's a deadswitch literally.

yet that is way after the fact when you should have made a nandbackup~ clearly you cant follow simple instructions (literally one of the first steps btw incase you didnt know)

I don't know why there are people who keep blaming the people who got fucked over here. It is their fault they didn't make a backup and therefore cannot recover their consoles. It is Creatables and JellyPersons fault for breaking others consoles in the first place. Put it this way: who would you blame if the brick were recoverable by doing a firmware reset, yet destroyed everything else? You would lose everything on there, but you could use the console again. It would be Creatable and JellyPerson... or would you still blame the victims for not rigorously checking each and every thing they choose to use on their machines? Do you google each and every thing you download to ensure it isn't malicious? Do you attempt to verify the hashes of everything, even when no verifiable hash exists?
