Some of you seriously need to get a life so you don't keep feeling the need to inject drama into everything you post here. It started out funny but now it's actually quite sad and depressing. There are only a couple or 3 people who actually need to be having this discussion but some of you are acting like you are "in" on things and taking it way too personally.

Btw, if it's news to anyone that a business is doing shady stuff then you haven't been alive for long.

On the same note, if it's news to anyone that a homebrew dev is shady as fuck then you also haven't been around very long.

Why would I want to expose someone's real identity and open them up to ridicule and potential litigation? I know that's what everyone here seems to want but it's not going to happen. It shouldn't be what YOU want to happen either. I don't care if you believe me. You can make up your own mind. Buy commercial mods or don't. I'm baffled as to why everyone is so interested in this behind-closed-doors stuff to begin with yet never question why it comes out the few times that it does.
If they chose to backstab the trust those people put in them not to pull the things TX does, yes, they deserve the ridicule and litigation. I have little sympathy and patience for those that backstab and betray other people for material gain.

Secondly, the reason why you may not have seen me pop up before with this type of curiosity might just be because... oh I dunno... This is the second scene I'm in? I only got interested in homebrew during the 3DS scene and any interest with a serious capacity only started a year ago.

@Ev1l0rd Then just enjoy whatever your using, whether it be homebrew or whatever. This "inside baseball" drama is what drove me away from "the scene" in 2011. It didn't used to be like this until the PS3. I've been around a long time and still have old friends who go back as far as I do. I tried to do a favor for someone (and to put any speculation to rest it was not GaryOPA) and got a bucket of shit dumped in my lap as a result. I don't blame them. I blame myself for thinking things had changed.

I wouldn't do it for $6,000. $20,000? Maybe.

Perhaps it's illegal, but hey business is business. And this is a business offer, not a bribe.
bribe: persuade (someone) to act in one's favor, typically illegally or dishonestly, by a gift of money or other inducement
and in this case it is illegal

Dictionary definitions don't hold weight in the real world like that. You call it a bribe, people call it business.

If you want to go that route though, then okay sure let's say it's a 'bribe', and that's exactly how the world works.

It's illegal, so what? Their whole damn product is illegal and Nintendo even pointed out TX on their anti-piracy website. The key is whether TX can do illegal stuff, make a profit and get away with it, because there's no way to enforce the law when they steal licenses for unauthorized purposes. People get unhappy because their capitaism damages the community as a whole, but they don't care about people's feelings, only about making things that work and profiting from it.

The word 'illegal' is being abused for 'I don't like people doing this so I'm using this term to take the moral high ground' but 'it's okay for me to hack and mod my switch even though Nintendo doesn't like it'. Come on.

Facts bigger than this community's ego.
It is kind of concerning if this is true though.

there is a huge difference between fucking a entire homebrew community, and screwing Nintendo over.
Apparently according to you, there is only black and white and no shades of grey.
Messing with Nintendo's software is fine. Why? Because the amount of people who hack their console is tiny compared to those who don't. That is my reasoning.
But I care about communities. I care about fanbases. I care about the products that are put out in this world. If there is a good product, I'll buy it.
If this 'business' deal went through. It would be a giant fuck you to a entire homebrew community. Stunting growth and privatizing a lot of homebrew until someone else created open gl support. Just because some corperation decided to say:
"Hey we are loosing revelancy so let's create a business deal as a big fuck you to the homebrew community that is our base for cfw. It's a WONDERFUL IDEA."
Because keep in mind that a lot of Tx's code is from the community. So it's a great idea to shit on your origin.

I know when I mod my console, I don't intend on using the mods I have to be a fucking douche bag to the community, I have no intentions on cheating or ruining another experience unless it's offline. But this "Business" deal would ruin hundreds of people's experiences in the homebrew community and give a retarded advantage to a company who shouldn't run a homebrew community. And doesn't deserve any fucking respect in my eyes. And it's the people who blindly buy their product without looking into things, without even second guessing what they are doing pisses me off.
I'm a firm believer in vote with your dollar. And supporting a shitty product is not something I plan on doing.

Now this wouldn't be a problem if companies did own homebrew communities often in the past.
But they rarely ever do
and even when there is a company involved allowing homebrew such as the ds with flashcards. No one flashcard maker thought: Let's get some more cash out of people and take something that people are expecting that is being made from the community and force it into our product and then shit on that community by taking it away from everyone else. And making sure the creator doesn't release it to the public.

It may be true that home brewing a device is just as illegal as a company who violates licences. But one of them isn't giving cash to a shitty product. And that is what makes the decision for me. If I'm going to do something I shouldn't, then mitigated the impact as much as possible.
Now let's talk about bribes again. Since you want to talk the colloquial version, I'm sorry to say but where I live, a bribe is usually against the peoples wishes and or illegal. Which is pretty close to that dictionary definition. But if you insist on using the colloquial version, then a 'business' deal could mean the same as a bribe.

My favorite thing about is amyone who has spent more than a minute in the RetroNX server knows they drastically care what the users are using to boot RA. It's a vital piece of the puzzle.

Beyond any of that, who the hell do you people think you are demanding any other human beings personal, private conversation??? It has been proven, unequivocally, that what TX offered was not legal or in line with ANY of the licenses RetroArch uses. It has also been established that TX are the people who initiated contact with that goal in mind. How is there any conversation left to be had? What is still grey?

PS: if someone offers you a lot of money for a large degree of work, produces no contract, and doesn't pay you should definitely NOT provide that labor; even if you were not already aware that the offer was straight-up illegal.

Kinda interesting that some TX users agree its a bribe, yet not a single anti-TX user agrees its just business.

Btw, if 6000 was the bribe then how much was it to actually do the job?

Expect this is a bribe. They offered him money to break the law and stop working on his open source projects. Literally looking at every definition of bribery, this is an act of bribery.
If Team Xecuter is based in China, then it's not illegal. You can't break a law in a country where no such law exists. Therefore, it' is really more like a signing bonus that comes with a job, more than it would be a bribe.

Also just a quick note: there is nothing in the GPLv3 which disallows you from modifying the GPL software so it only works with a very specific hardware. You are only not allowed to modify the hardware, so it only runs one program under GPL.

So all of this 'against the law" talk in this thread is incorrect? Nevermind that 'against the law' implies a criminal offense, when all that would really be involved here at most is a civil IP infringement (and with an open source license, who would have standing to claim ownership rights and sue?) ... you're saying this wouldn't even violate the terms of the GPLv3 license in the first place?

Expect that's not what's happening here. They wanted him to stop working on his open source project and move it to closed-source, without changing the code. That request is a violation of the GPL3.

It wouldn't be the SX team that would face legal charges, it would be the one who accepted the bribe and violated the GPL3 that could be subject to legal charges. Just because the SX team is based in China, doesn't mean @m4xw would get a free pass if legal charges were pressed.

Unless he moved to China before accepting the money/job.
I guess, but that would also be an extremely risky and costly move just to avoid legal charges (legal charges that would most likely be cheaper than the move itself) and even that $6000 won't get him very far.

Assuming you are correct, @m4xw ?

Also how sure are you that he wasn't playing you like he was playing TX?

and how do you know he isn't playing you. it's easy to say i was just seeing how far they would go, I think there is more to it than he says, as i said before libretro thought there was when they tweeted 'sided' and he had joined them.

also it took him what to page 30+ to admit about his hourly rate and the $6,000

like i said the truth is probably somewhere in the middle .

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

so you just wanted to see how far they went, yet from your log, you said you decided not to work with them, so you did consider working with them and it looks like from what you posted things went wrong and you decided not to. this is more than you just wanting to see how far they went, but how far you really went.
