If I factory restore my CFW switch will I be able to update the console and go online without being banned? I have never installed any pirated games and have only used cfw for homebrew like doom and quake.
Factory reset won't remove logs and such. So no. Generally, factory reset won't help you not getting banned.
What steps can I take to minimize the chance of a ban? I don't have a nand backup since I didn't think just using the homebrew channel had any risk of ban as I've now been informed it does.

You can start whenever you want, but it might not be safe. To make it safer, you would have to "recreate" the NAND, which is possible, but I have no idea how. That would be the safes thing to do.
If he ever had a report and recreates his nand now he will also get banned.

We don't care about saved reports, but about sent reports. Saved reports can be removed.
So if he ever sent a report and would clean it, he can be flagged. But if he had saved reports, it is pretty much safe.

don't listen to them. Factory reset through maintenance mode and you're good to go. It's your best option in your case.
What CFW did you use? Anything except SXOS is ok, because they wont save reports since creport was introduced.
Delete the CFW and all homebrew from your SD and you are good to go.
With SXOS comput3rus3r is right, nothing can be done here.
You dont want to delete any previous report that got send to N and you can't only delete specific reports (afaik).
So you can only hope that they are "clean"

In order to minimize the possible chance of getting banned, you must understand that making any modification to your Switch will possibly get you banned. You either hack your Switch and get banned or don't hack the Switch and still be able to play your games like normal. Also report here about getting banned. Stop making pointless thread.
