Does WiiFlow Lite or USB Loader GX supports loading games over SMB? It would be really useful, since it means I won't need to have my USB plugged in all the time, and modifications won't require me to unplug it.

no, it's not the loader's fault, but the cIOS is not coded to get data over SMB.
even if cIOS would allow it (it would need network always enabled, not sure it would conflict with game's own network access), I think it will not have necessary bandwidth.

over wifi it would be too slow, the wifi is locked to a specific speed.
over LAN, I'm not sure but I think the speed is limited to same wifi speed. but I can't confirm, I don't have one and never tested. in fact, very few people have one.

I once streamed a ISO through wifi in a PS2 at 54Mbps with no lag. I believe the bandwith would suffice since Wii games and PS2 are not that different. And I agree, it would probably conflict online gaming but should be enough for single/multiplayer in the same console. Most homebrews have a SMB support, but USB loaders don't.

Hello.:)

I have a question about SMB Share please.

I take a look on WiiMC and Wiixplorer, they have settings for SMB access.I tried it and works great.
I have NO INTEREST of copying great amounts of data like WBFS files or play Games over network.:creep:

My question please:
Is it possible to code/program SMB access for USBLoader GX ?

If yes,is it maybe also possible to tell USBLoader GX to get the Cheatfiles GCT/TXT from an SMB folder on PC (to change in the custom path settings between SD/USB1 AND SMB) ? Instead of downloading from geckocodes.org because i don´t think they remove their DDos protection again....

I´m not a coder/programmer so i don´t have any idea or can´t imagine, what is impossible to code or never to be realise. So please have leniency of my inquiry.

Thank you.:)

possible to add it in the loader : yes
if I know how to do it ? nope :P (but I can learn)
If I'll do it ? noooo idea. probably not. I already have problem doing anything easier, due to time constraint and procrastination.

If it's meant to fix the DDOS protection from geckocodes, that'll not fix it. the loader will not use the computer as proxy (homebrew are not working with proxies), so you'll need to download the file manually.
at least, I don't see how it's different between : you accessing the site manually and download file to PC (for SMB share), and you accessing the site manually but put cheats on SD (for usbloadergx without SMB share).

the only advantage is "putting the file on PC to be available on SMB share while USBLoaderGX is already running", because you can just use WiiXplorer to put the file on SD if you don't want to eject the SD Card.
I think you can put SD on PC, download all wanted "txt" from geckocode in your txtcodes folder. You'll have to search for the game manually on the site instead of having the loader get the url directly based on gameID.

Hello.:)

Thank you for your explanations.

My Idea was:

- download the geckocodes on the PC (maybe all)
- put them in a Folder and share it to the network
- use that as SMB Folder for USBLoader GX (if implemented)
- if Ocarina use a cheat to download
- instead downloading from geckocodes.org UsbLoader GX "download" it from the SMB Folder from my PC.

:)

ok, then in that case you can just copy all downloaded files to SD, no?
the longer is to get all txt files from geckocodes, there doesn't seem to be a way to download all of them in one big pack.

I think MAY be too many ppl are trying to download all codes at once abusing the server and that triggered the use of DDOS protection and made everyone suffers.
I used to download codes only one at a time when I started to play a game and only if I really need to cheat.

If you already downloaded the codes, you won't need to download them again unless there is an update so whats the point of SMB? Just copy them to the SD card, its way faster than over the network and like Cyan said, you can use Wiixplorer for occasional FTP/SMB transfers if you really don't want to unplug your SD from the Wii or use a Wifi flash card

You could also wait for someone to add the feature to usblaoders - good luck on that!

Last time I did, I was on WindowsXP.
I had to disable "easy sharing method", create a new user account for XP (I called it "Wii"). For security reason, I didn't want to create a shared folder with main windows' account, so I made a specific new "wii" account with limited rights, not admin, etc.
Then, with the main account (admin) I created a folder which I shared and specifically set read/write access rights to "Wii" (in the "seciurity tab" of the shared folder). not setting the security access resulted in errors. I needed to force "read access to Wii user" in that folder security.

On windows, there's a way to hide the newly created account on the logon screen, so you don't hit or try to log into it, and can still autolog to your unique displayed account if wanted.
hiding the account was a little obscure option, but I found the steps on internet. not too hard to find.

on Wii, go to the homebrew settings and fill the information : ip of the computer, username "Wii" (the name of the account on the computer), its password, and the path (folder name you shared).
If there's no settings in the GUI, look at the setting file in a text editor. But I remember there was a menu directly in the emulator.

I didn't try on recent OS, I don't know if you can share easily without creating a new user account. but I'd refrain from sharing using my main PC account name/password.
I don't know if it's possible to share using the "simple sharing mode" of Windows, without password.

Like said the user above you, old SMB version has a big security hole.

@alexander1970 Can you explain how you made a SMB Share server? I want to make one for SNES9X but IDK how.
Hello and sorry for overreading your question.

I "learned" it for the Wii with WiiMC,thats not so hard:

Windows 10 pro:

- share an Folder on your PC for your Wii ("anyone" as share type)
- in WinMC add an SMB share
- choose an Display Name for it (something)
- IP from your PC
- Share name, that from the folder on the PC .Only the Folder name (not \\xxx\xxx)
- User and Password from your PC account

Ready to go.:)

It depends on your security settings on your PC if this works or not.

Good luck.:)

WODE Jukebox, a piece of hardware designed to emulate an optical drive, allowed access to ISOs over SMB. I have one, and used it until my son ignored my instructions and upgraded to v4.3 firmware, which broke the WODE. I put the Wii into storage and he no longer had a game console.
